Israel to Honor Donald Trump with Presidential Medal for Role in Gaza Hostage Release
Oct 2025 : Israel President Isaac Herzog announced on Monday that he will award the country’s highest civilian honor, the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour, to former US President Donald Trump. The recognition comes for Trump’s pivotal role in securing the release of hostages from Gaza and contributing to efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.
In a statement issued by his office, Herzog praised Trump’s “tireless efforts” that not only facilitated the safe return of hostages but also “laid the foundations for a new era in the Middle East built on security, cooperation, and genuine hope for a peaceful future.” He added, “It will be a great honour for me to present him with the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour.”
The award is scheduled to be presented in the coming months, and Herzog confirmed that he will inform Trump of his decision during the former president’s visit to Israel on Monday.
The visit coincides with the first phase of a peace initiative proposed by Trump, under which Israel and Hamas are set to conduct a hostage-prisoner exchange. Trump’s 20-point plan seeks to end over two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas, which erupted after the Palestinian militant group launched a major attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
During his brief stay, Trump is expected to meet families of hostages and address the Israeli parliament.
The Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour is reserved for individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the state of Israel or to humanity. In 2013, the award was previously bestowed on former US President Barack Obama.
Herzog’s decision to honor Trump highlights the significant diplomatic and humanitarian role the former US leader played in addressing one of the region’s most challenging crises, while also underscoring Israel’s continued emphasis on fostering international cooperation and peace.
