Mexico, U.S. Extend Deadline on Tariff Imposition

Mexico City, Oct 2025 : Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday that she and U.S. President Donald Trump have agreed to postpone the implementation of new U.S. tariffs on Mexican exports that were scheduled to take effect on November 1.

Trump had earlier threatened to raise tariffs on select Mexican goods from 25 percent to 30 percent in July but granted Mexico a 90-day reprieve to allow negotiations between the two nations. The extension was due to expire on November 1.

Following discussions held on Saturday, both sides decided to allow “a few more weeks” for Mexico to address Washington’s demands concerning 54 non-tariff barriers, Sheinbaum said during her daily press briefing.

“We’re practically closing this issue,” the Mexican president remarked, expressing optimism about resolving the trade dispute soon.

Since taking office in January, President Trump has maintained a trade policy emphasizing tariffs against countries he believes treat the United States unfairly. His administration has imposed duties on Mexican steel, aluminum, and copper, among other products.

The latest agreement is expected to ease tensions between the two neighboring nations and provide additional time to reach a mutually beneficial trade arrangement.
