PM Modi Begins Two-Day Bhutan Visit to Attend Fourth King’s 70th Birthday Celebrations

New Delhi, Nov 2025 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday began a two-day official visit to Bhutan to participate in the 70th birthday celebrations of the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The visit underscores the deep-rooted ties between the two neighbouring nations and marks yet another milestone in their exemplary partnership.

Before departing for Thimphu, PM Modi expressed his admiration for Bhutan’s leadership and people, noting that it would be an honour to join them in celebrating the Fourth King’s landmark birthday. “I am confident that my visit will further deepen our bonds of friendship and strengthen our efforts towards shared progress and prosperity,” he said.

During his stay, the Prime Minister will hold meetings with Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, the Fourth King, and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. The discussions are expected to focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation across sectors including energy, connectivity, and people-to-people ties.

A key highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of the Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project—an important symbol of India-Bhutan development cooperation and a major step forward in the two countries’ shared energy goals. PM Modi will also attend the Global Peace Prayer Festival, organised by the Royal Government of Bhutan, showcasing the spiritual and cultural bonds that unite the nations.

Reiterating the significance of the partnership on social media, the Prime Minister posted on X, “Leaving for Bhutan, where I will attend various programmes… I will be holding talks with His Majesty the King of Bhutan, His Majesty the Fourth King, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.”

Calling the India-Bhutan relationship a cornerstone of India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, PM Modi emphasised that the friendship continues to serve as a model for harmonious and constructive ties between neighbouring countries.
