Vinesh Phogat Disqualified from Paris Olympics 2024: A National Heartbreak

India is reeling from the news of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the 50 kg women’s wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024. The disqualification came after Phogat’s weight was found to be 100 grams over the 50 kg limit, despite extensive efforts to make weight. According to reports, Phogat’s weight was 52 kg on Tuesday night. In an attempt to reduce it, she engaged in strenuous activities like cycling and skipping, with support from her team including Gagan Narang, Dinshaw Pardiwala, her husband, and medical staff. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful, and Phogat’s condition deteriorated, leading to dehydration and fainting.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed the disqualification, citing that Phogat’s weight was a few grams over the limit despite the team’s overnight efforts. The statement requested respect for Phogat’s privacy during this distressing time and mentioned that no further comments would be made by the team. The disqualification has caused widespread grief and outrage across India, with AAP leader Sanjay Singh even suggesting a boycott of the Olympics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support and sympathy for Phogat in a social media post, acknowledging her status as a champion and a source of inspiration for India. He encouraged her to come back stronger and praised her resilience. Meanwhile, Phogat’s place in the finals will now be taken by Cuban wrestler Yusneilis Guzman, whom she defeated in the semifinals. The gold medal match will proceed with Sarah Ann Hildebrandt from the USA.

The national mood remains somber as Phogat’s disqualification marks a significant setback for Indian wrestling. The Indian Olympic Association and the wider sports community continue to support Phogat as she recovers from this setback.
