9th Upper Yamuna Review Committee Meeting Paves Way for Yamuna Water to Reach Shekhawati, Rajasthan

Jaipur, Nov 2025 : The 9th meeting of the Upper Yamuna Review Committee, crucial for Rajasthan, was held on Thursday at Yamuna Bhawan in Noida. Rajasthan Water Resources Minister Suresh Singh Rawat attended the meeting. He stated that the dedicated efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini have paved the way to implement the long-pending Yamuna water diversion project.

Minister Rawat highlighted that under Chief Minister Sharma’s leadership, the state government is taking important decisions to ensure water availability to the farthest corners of the state. The Yamuna water project remains a priority for the Rajasthan government. He added that following a historic MoU in February 2024, a Joint Task Force was formed by Haryana and Rajasthan to finalize the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which is now in its final stages. Rawat emphasized that bringing Yamuna water is critical for water security in Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region, including Sikar, Churu, and Jhunjhunu.

The Water Resources Minister expressed gratitude to Union Minister C.R. Patil and Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini for their relentless efforts in expediting the project to bring Yamuna water to the Shekhawati region. Rawat informed that three projects—Renukaji, Lakhwar, and Kishau—are under construction on the Yamuna and its tributaries in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and the Rajasthan government has approved its share of funding to ensure timely completion.

Rawat further explained that alongside these ongoing projects, a transport system must be developed to divert part of the monsoon flow of the Yamuna into Rajasthan. The state government has already issued work orders for preparing the DPR of this system, which is being prepared under the coordination of the Joint Task Force of both states and will soon be submitted to the Central Water Commission. This system will allow the optimal use of excess monsoon water and ensure water security across districts by transporting water from future projects into Rajasthan.

Minister Rawat also urged that Renukaji, Lakhwar, and Kishau be treated as national projects to secure financial assistance for diverting Yamuna water into Rajasthan from Hathini Kund Barrage. He highlighted the urgent need to renovate the Okhla Head–Gurgaon canal system, noting that increasing its capacity will ensure Rajasthan receives its allocated share of water.

The committee meeting was chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil and attended by ministers and senior officials from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi. From Rajasthan, Chief Engineer and Additional Secretary of Water Resources, Bhuvan Bhaskar, and other senior officials participated.
