Governor and Chief Minister Grace Closing Function of Mizoram Catholic Church Centenary Celebrations

Aizawl, Nov 2025: Mizoram, Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), and Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma today jointly attended the grand closing ceremony of the year-long Mizoram Catholic Church Centenary Jubilee celebrations held at Bishop’s House Compound, Ramthar Veng, Aizawl.

In his address, Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh described the completion of 100 years by the Catholic Church in Mizoram as a deeply joyous and significant milestone. He paid tributes to the early missionaries who, a century ago, brought not only the Gospel but also education, healthcare and community development to the people of Mizoram. “The visible fruits of their labour are evident today in the unity, peace and mutual respect that have become the hallmark characteristics of Mizoram society,” he said.

The Governor lauded the Catholic Church for its outstanding contribution towards building the social, spiritual and moral foundations of the state. He particularly highlighted its exemplary work in social service, healthcare, education, inter-church harmony and youth development. Calling upon the Catholic community to continue its mission with renewed vigour in the century ahead, he urged greater engagement of youth, effective use of digital platforms, continued promotion of peace and unity, and enhanced commitment towards serving the poor and marginalised sections of society.

Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma extended warm greetings and heartfelt felicitations to the Catholic Church and its entire congregation on this historic occasion. He gratefully recalled that the very first non-government high school in Mizoram, St. Paul’s High School, was established by the Catholic Church. “Because of the pioneering efforts of the Catholic Church, Mizoram today boasts some of the finest educational institutions in the state and the country, many of which consistently rank among the best in India,” he stated.

The Chief Minister also praised the Church’s compassionate service towards the underprivileged, noting the remarkable work carried out through the Zoram Entu Pawl (ZEP) and other initiatives. He acknowledged that many distinguished Mizo leaders, administrators and achievers in various fields have emerged from the Catholic community. On behalf of the people of Mizoram, Pu Lalduhoma expressed profound gratitude to the Catholic Church for its century of selfless service and invaluable contributions to the state.

The programme was also attended by the Minister for School Education, Dr. Vanlalthlana.

The Catholic Church in Mizoram was formally established on 1st February 1925. At present, it has a membership exceeding 20,000.
