Maharashtra to Host India’s Largest Shipyard, CM Fadnavis Directs

Nagpur, Dec 2025: Considering Maharashtra’s 720-kilometer coastline, the ongoing development of Jetties and ports, and immense opportunities in the maritime sector, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed that India’s largest shipyard be established in Maharashtra by 2026.

The directive came during a review meeting of the Ports Development Department, held at the Council of Ministers Hall, Vidhan Bhavan. Fisheries and Ports Development Minister Nitesh Rane was also present.

Key directions from CM Fadnavis:

  • Prepare a comprehensive project report for the shipyard, ensuring site identification is completed.
  • Develop the Jaigad, Angre, Revdanda, and Vijayawada ports, and construct the Vaibhavwadi–Kolhapur railway line to support port connectivity, with financial support from the state government.
  • For the ongoing Vasai-Vadgaon port development, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation should plan the highway along both sides of the affected areas to ensure integrated development.
  • Attract investors for industrial development in port-adjacent areas. A company should be established jointly by MIDC and the Ports Department to promote industrial growth in the region.
  • A special planning authority should be formed for the development of major ports and surrounding areas, especially considering the ongoing Vasai port project.

Mumbai Water Metro project directives:

  • Boats should be fully electric, with hybrid models initially deployed.
  • New vessels should be procured, aiming for a project larger than Kochi’s Water Metro, and completed efficiently.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Chief Secretary of Transport and Ports Sanjay Sethi, CEO of Maharashtra Maritime Board Pradeep P., and other senior officials.

Project details:

  • Currently, the Mumbai Water Metro operates 36 passenger routes, transporting 1.8 million passengers annually.
  • Within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, 21 passenger routes serve 1.6 million annual commuters.
  • The proposed project will include 21 terminals and create 200 nautical miles of waterways. Preparation of the detailed project report is underway.
