15 Dead After Boat Carrying Indian Tourists Capsizes Near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island

Hanoi, July 2026 : At least 15 people were killed after a boat carrying Indian tourists capsized near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island on Saturday, while 21 others were rescued and admitted to hospitals for treatment, according to local media reports. Search and rescue operations are continuing as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The Indian Embassy in Vietnam confirmed the incident, stating that the boat carrying several Indian tourists overturned near Phu Quoc Island and that local authorities were conducting extensive rescue efforts.

“In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam a few hours ago. Exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing,” the Embassy of India in Hanoi said in a post on X.

To assist those affected by the accident, the Indian mission has established emergency control rooms in both Hanoi and the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City. The control rooms will coordinate with Vietnamese authorities and provide information and support to the families of the victims and other passengers.

According to Vietnamese news outlet VnExpress, the speedboat was carrying 32 Indian tourists, along with a flight attendant and four crew members, when it met with the accident near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, a popular tourist destination off Phu Quoc.

The report, citing officials from the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, said the incident occurred at around 1 p.m. after the speedboat, operated by Ocean Pear Island Company, reportedly suffered an unexpected malfunction before capsizing.

Several nearby tourist boats rushed to the scene after spotting the distressed vessel and assisted in rescuing passengers from the water. Officials from the An Thoi Port Border Guard Station said that 15 people, including two women and 13 men, lost their lives in the accident. The 21 rescued passengers were immediately shifted to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment.

Vietnamese authorities launched a large-scale rescue operation by deploying two vessels carrying 35 officers and personnel. The Border Guard Station is also coordinating with the Vietnamese Navy and Coast Guard to search for any missing passengers and investigate the cause of the accident.

May Rut Ngoai Island is one of Phu Quoc’s most popular tourist attractions, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and coral reef diving. Tourists typically travel to the island by boat or speedboat, with the journey taking between 20 and 40 minutes. Authorities are expected to release further details as rescue operations and investigations continue.
