IndiGo Faces ₹58.75 Crore Tax Penalty as DGCA Tightens Oversight Amid Nationwide Flight Chaos
New Delhi, Dec 2025 : IndiGo, already battling intense regulatory scrutiny and widespread flight disruptions, has been hit with a tax penalty notice of ₹58.75 crore for the financial year 2020–21. The order, issued by the Additional Commissioner of CGST, Delhi South Commissionerate, was received by the airline on Thursday, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd said in a regulatory filing. The demand includes both GST dues and penalties.
This development comes at a time when the airline is struggling with major operational breakdowns that have led to thousands of flight cancellations across the country, leaving travellers stranded at airports nationwide. The disruptions have triggered strong intervention from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
In a decisive move, the DGCA has dismissed four flight inspectors responsible for supervising IndiGo’s safety and operational compliance. According to sources, the regulator found lapses and negligence in their inspection duties, prompting immediate disciplinary action.
To regain control over the worsening situation, the DGCA has deployed two special oversight teams at IndiGo’s Gurugram headquarters. These teams will monitor the airline’s functioning in real time and submit detailed daily reports by 6 p.m.
The first team is tracking IndiGo’s operational backbone — fleet availability, pilot strength, crew duty hours, training schedules, split-duty practices, unplanned leave patterns, and the number of flights affected by manpower shortages. The team is also analysing the airline’s network and average stage length to assess the full scale of the crisis.
The second team has been tasked with evaluating the impact on passengers. Their review includes refund processing by both IndiGo and travel agents, compensation issued under Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR), on-time performance, baggage handling, and the overall status of cancellations.
The combined troubles — regulatory action, operational lapses, and now a significant tax penalty — mark one of the most challenging periods for India’s largest airline.
Team Maverick.
