Indian Spinners Dominate as Sri Lanka Women Restricted to 128/9 in Second T20I

Visakhapatnam, Dec 2025 : A disciplined bowling performance led by spinners N. Shree Charani and Vaishnavi Sharma helped India Women restrict Sri Lanka Women to a modest 128 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs during the second T20 International at the Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first and made immediate inroads into the Sri Lankan batting line-up. The hosts maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings, ensuring wickets fell at regular intervals and preventing the visitors from gaining any sustained momentum. Sri Lanka, who had managed 121 runs in the first T20I, showed only marginal improvement despite a slightly better batting effort.

The visitors suffered an early blow in the opening over when pacer Kranti Gaud dismissed Vishmi Gunaratne for just one run, caught on the follow-through. Although Arundathi Reddy conceded a few loose deliveries early on, India’s bowlers kept a tight leash, forcing Sri Lanka into errors. Despite scoring 39 runs in the powerplay, Sri Lanka found it difficult to build partnerships.

Captain Chamari Athapaththu once again anchored the innings for Sri Lanka. She played a brisk knock of 31 off 24 balls, striking two sixes to inject some urgency. However, her resistance ended when she was dismissed by Sneh Rana, who came into the side as the lone change for India after Deepti Sharma was ruled out due to fever.

Harshitha Samarawickrama, walking in at No. 3, partnered with Perera to steady the innings. The duo rotated the strike effectively, taking Sri Lanka to 66 for 2 at the halfway stage. However, the lack of boundary options with a spread-out field began to hurt the scoring rate. Perera struggled to accelerate and was eventually dismissed for 22 off 28 balls by Shree Charani in the 13th over, ending a 44-run stand.

Harshitha looked confident during her stay at the crease and emerged as the top scorer with 33 runs. However, her innings ended in disappointment when she was run out in the 17th over, a setback that stalled Sri Lanka’s hopes of a late surge.

The final overs saw India tighten the screws further. Vaishnavi Sharma made a memorable impact by picking up her maiden T20I wicket, dismissing Nilakshi de Silva for 2. A late collapse followed, with Sri Lanka losing wickets in quick succession and failing to capitalise on the final overs.

For India, Shree Charani was the standout performer, returning figures of 2 for 23, while Vaishnavi Sharma claimed 2 for 32. Kranti Gaud chipped in with 1 for 21, and Sneh Rana impressed with economical figures of 1 for 11, as India’s bowlers collectively delivered a strong all-round effort.

Brief Scores:
Sri Lanka Women 128/9 in 20 overs (Harshitha Samarawickrama 33, Chamari Athapaththu 32; Shree Charani 2/23, Vaishnavi Sharma 2/32) vs India Women.

Team Maverick.
