Providing scholarships to students is the Delhi Government’s investment in their future: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta distributes scholarships worth ₹25.25 crore to 1,709 meritorious students

Education Minister Ashish Sood says: Delhi will export leaders through the strength of education

New Delhi, January 2026 : The Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Rekha Gupta, on Monday, marking the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, distributed scholarship amounts to economically weaker yet meritorious students under the Delhi Higher and Technical Education Assistance Scheme at the Thyagaraj Stadium. Under this scheme, implemented by the Directorate of Education of the Delhi Government, scholarships amounting to a total of ₹25.25 crore were awarded to 1,709 students studying in various universities across Delhi.

Congratulating the students, the Chief Minister said that providing scholarships is the Delhi Government’s investment in their bright future. The initiative, she said, is a significant step towards strengthening the future of the youth. The programme was attended by Delhi’s Education Minister Shri Ashish Sood, senior officials of the Education Department, Vice-Chancellors of various universities, educationists, and a large number of students.

The Chief Minister stated that under the academic years 2023-24 and 2024-25, a total scholarship amount of ₹25.25 crore has been transferred directly to the bank accounts of 1,709 meritorious students. She further informed that a pending scholarship amount of ₹19 crore from the tenure of the previous government has also been released by the present government. She made it clear that no amount earmarked for students’ education will remain pending henceforth.

On the occasion of National Youth Day, the Chief Minister urged students to study the thoughts and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda and to continue progressing steadily in their careers while striving to realise their dreams. She said that only when the youth move forward will the nation progress. She added that India has entered a crucial phase of the Amrit Kaal, and that youth power will play the most significant role in achieving the goal of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.

The Chief Minister also emphasised that national progress is possible not only through governments or policies, but through the collective responsibility and active participation of 140 crore citizens.

Speaking on the occasion, Education Minister Shri Ashish Sood said that there will no longer be politics over education in Delhi; instead, politics will be solely for the improvement of education. This change, he said, has come not through speeches but through policy and intent. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta and the guidance of Honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, the government’s core mantra is Antyodaya- ensuring that the first benefit of the system reaches the student who stands at the very end of the line but dreams of going the farthest.

The Education Minister added that the objective of the government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is clear: not to hide problems, but to solve them. It is this approach that has led to the development of the Narela Education City, whose budget has been increased from ₹500 crore to ₹1,300 crore. Shared campuses for universities, international-level campuses, auditoriums, libraries, digital libraries, and ICT labs will be developed across 160 acres under the Chief Minister’s leadership. A project that had remained stalled for years is now being implemented under her guidance. Delhi, he said, will export leaders on the strength of education.

A Scheme for Meritorious Students

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Higher and Technical Education Assistance Scheme is being implemented as an important initiative to empower meritorious students from economically weaker sections. The objective of the scheme is to ensure that no talented student is deprived of higher education due to financial constraints. Under the scheme, students who have passed Class XII from Delhi schools with a minimum of 75 per cent marks, and who meet the prescribed income criteria, are provided with financial assistance. The eligible assistance amount is transferred directly to students’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring complete transparency.
