US Reviewing Iran’s Strait of Hormuz Proposal, Reaffirms Firm Nuclear Red Lines

Washington, April 2026 : The White House on Monday confirmed that US President Donald Trump and his national security team are examining an Iranian proposal related to the possible reopening of the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, even as Washington reiterated that its core position on Iran’s nuclear programme remains unchanged.

Speaking at a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the proposal was discussed during a high-level meeting earlier in the day. However, she declined to share specifics, stating that it would be premature to comment before the President and his advisers finalise their assessment.

“The President has met with his national security team this morning. The proposal was being discussed,” Leavitt said, adding that she did not want to pre-empt any official position.

Despite ongoing deliberations, Leavitt made it clear that the administration’s stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions remains firm. She emphasised that Washington’s red lines have been consistently communicated, both domestically and to Tehran, leaving little ambiguity about the US position.

On questions related to operational developments in the Strait of Hormuz, including reports of potential mine-clearing efforts, the White House refrained from providing details. Leavitt directed such queries to the Pentagon, noting that operational matters involving military strategy and maritime security are not typically discussed in public briefings due to their sensitive nature.

“I would defer you to the Pentagon on anything with respect to clearing mines in the Strait of Hormuz,” she said, underlining that any official updates would come from the appropriate defence authorities at the right time.

She also declined to confirm whether such operations are currently underway, reiterating that these issues fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense and involve classified considerations.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor, has remained at the centre of rising geopolitical tensions in recent weeks. Analysts note that decisions surrounding its reopening or security management carry significant implications for international trade, energy supplies, and regional stability.

Experts suggest that the limited disclosure from US officials reflects the strategic sensitivity of the situation, as any public revelation of military or diplomatic steps could impact ongoing negotiations and security operations.

As discussions continue behind closed doors, the US administration appears to be balancing diplomatic engagement with Iran while maintaining a firm posture on national security priorities, particularly concerning nuclear non-proliferation.
