CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Urges Restraint as Zubeen Garg Death Case Remains Sub Judice

Guwahati, Jan 2026 : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday refrained from commenting on the proceedings underway in Singapore’s coroner’s court in connection with the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, emphasizing that political leaders must exercise restraint in matters that are sub judice.

Responding to media queries, the Chief Minister said the investigation conducted by the Singapore Police has already been completed and its findings submitted to the competent court in Singapore, where the matter is currently under judicial consideration. Given the ongoing legal process, he underlined that it would be inappropriate for political leaders to make public observations that could be misconstrued or influence perceptions.

CM Sarma clarified that the legal proceedings in Singapore and the investigation being carried out by the Assam Police are entirely independent of each other. Both are being conducted under different jurisdictions and legal frameworks, and one does not interfere with or supersede the other.

“Whatever details have appeared in the media, I have read them as well. Their investigation and ours are separate processes, each governed by its own laws and procedures,” he said, adding that any comment from his side at this stage could lead to unnecessary speculation.

The Chief Minister cautioned that statements by political figures on sensitive cases being examined by courts can often be misinterpreted, potentially complicating matters further. “When a case is before a court, politicians should avoid interference. We must refrain from commenting on what the court has observed or may observe,” he stated.

His remarks come amid heightened public and media attention following reports emerging from the Singapore coroner’s court regarding the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death. The developments have sparked widespread discussion, particularly in Assam, where Zubeen Garg enjoys immense popularity and cultural significance.

Meanwhile, the Assam Police continues its own inquiry in accordance with Indian law. Officials have reiterated that the state-level investigation is progressing independently and will examine all relevant aspects within its jurisdiction and mandate.

The Assam government has maintained a consistent stand of allowing due process to take its course, both domestically and internationally. Stressing the importance of respecting judicial proceedings, the government has said it will avoid any political intervention in the case, underscoring its commitment to legal propriety in a matter that has drawn significant public interest.
