Rajinikanth Leads Tributes to Bharathiraja, Says Tamil Cinema Legend Will Live Forever in People’s Hearts
Chennai, June 2026 : Superstar Rajinikanth on Wednesday paid an emotional tribute to veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, remembering him as a visionary director, a fearless voice in the film industry, and a dear friend whose legacy will remain etched in the hearts of Tamil people for generations.
The legendary actor visited the residence of the late filmmaker to offer his respects and later spoke to the media about his long association with Bharathiraja, which spanned nearly five decades.
Describing the six-time National Award-winning director as one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema, Rajinikanth said Bharathiraja’s contributions to the film industry went far beyond filmmaking. He recalled how the director introduced numerous actors, actresses, and technicians to the world of cinema and played a pivotal role in shaping Tamil cinema into what it is today.
“Bharathiraja was my friend for 50 years. Everyone knows about his extraordinary talent and achievements. He gave opportunities to countless artists and technicians and helped the industry grow. His contributions will never be forgotten, and his name will continue to live forever in the hearts of Tamil people,” Rajinikanth said.
The actor also shared personal memories that highlighted Bharathiraja’s candid and affectionate nature. According to Rajinikanth, the filmmaker possessed the innocence of a child and never hesitated to speak his mind.
“He was completely honest about his feelings. If he liked something, he would openly say so. If he didn’t, he would say that too. He once told me, ‘I like you, but I don’t like your acting,’” Rajinikanth recalled with a smile, underlining the director’s straightforward personality.
Rajinikanth noted that spending time with Bharathiraja was always a joyful experience because of his warmth and openness. He said the filmmaker’s frankness and genuine affection enabled him to build close relationships with people from all walks of life, including political leaders and cinema legends.
“He was close to everyone, including former Chief Ministers M.G. Ramachandran and M. Karunanidhi, as well as Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan. He had immense love and friendship for people and could walk into anyone’s house at any time,” Rajinikanth said.
Expressing regret over not being able to meet Bharathiraja during his final days, Rajinikanth revealed that he had hoped to visit him while he was undergoing treatment but was advised to wait until his health improved.
“Unfortunately, I never got that chance. He will always remain in my thoughts and memories. May his soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to his family,” he said.
Several prominent personalities from the film industry also paid homage to the acclaimed director. Among those who visited were actor, producer and parliamentarian Kamal Haasan and renowned music composer Ilaiyaraaja, both of whom shared a long and celebrated association with Bharathiraja.
