Trump Says U.S. Negotiating Long‑Term Role in Greenland, Pushes for Ukraine Peace at Davos

Washington, Jan 2026 : President Donald Trump said negotiations are ongoing over a potential long‑term U.S. role in Greenland, and framed his push to end the Ukraine war as a life‑saving diplomatic effort during an extended exchange with reporters aboard Air Force One after returning from the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 in Davos.

Trump said the Greenland arrangement would have no time limit — “infinity” — meaning it could last “forever,” and that it could include military cooperation and infrastructure projects such as a proposed “Golden Dome.” He stressed that the deal would involve NATO cooperation and that the United States would not bear costs beyond agreed infrastructure contributions. “We’re all going to work together,” he said, adding that NATO is part of the discussions.

When asked whether Denmark had agreed to the concept, Trump said, “I think everyone likes it,” and promised clearer details “in about two weeks.” He said he had discussed the proposal, including military presence, with the NATO secretary general.

On Ukraine, Trump said envoys are traveling to Moscow for talks, and argued that direct negotiations between the U.S., Ukraine and Russia are essential. “Anytime we meet, it’s good. If you don’t meet, nothing’s going to happen,” he said, adding that he believed Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky both want a deal. “Everybody’s making concessions to get it done,” Trump said, emphasizing that Europe should be heavily involved. He framed his efforts as aimed at saving lives, saying, “I’m doing this more for Europe than for me.”

Trump also spoke at length about the hardships facing Ukrainian civilians during winter, portraying their resilience and difficult conditions.

Turning to Venezuela, Trump praised what he described as “very strong leadership” and noted that oil was flowing to the U.S., with more than 50 million barrels already moving into the country — predicting benefits for both nations and lower domestic energy prices.

On Iran, Trump said U.S. forces are positioned in the region and warned of consequences if Tehran resumed executions. He claimed Iranian authorities canceled planned hangings after U.S. warnings and suggested that 25 % tariffs would soon apply to companies doing business with Iran.

Trump also announced the formation of a new “Board of Peace,” with nearly 30 countries already involved, though some require legislative approval before joining. When asked if he would chair it beyond his second term, Trump said, “I have the right to be if I want,” but had not decided.

On domestic issues, Trump said markets have responded positively to his policies and defended a proposed one‑year, 10 % cap on credit card interest, a measure requiring Congressional approval. He mentioned considering a Federal Reserve nominee from Wall Street and criticized the Fed building renovation costs.

Trump confirmed plans for campaign travel ahead of the midterms, acknowledged historical challenges for sitting presidents, and highlighted economic indicators such as falling fuel prices and strong investment levels. He said he expected to visit China in April and host the Chinese president later in the year.
