Aizawl, January 2026 : A meeting to review the ongoing anti-drug initiatives in Mizoram and to discuss future strategies was held today at the Chief Minister’s Office. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma and attended by Home Minister Pu K. Sapdanga, Excise & Narcotics Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, the Secretary of the Excise & Narcotics Department, Secretary (Home), IGP (HQ/L&O), Excise Commissioner, SP (Narcotics), and the President of the Central YMA. Senior officials from the Excise & Narcotics Department, Home Department, and leaders of the Central YMA were also present.
The Chief Minister stated that to strengthen the fight against drugs, the Mizoram Government had opened Excise & Narcotics Stations at Saitual, Khawzawl and Hnahthial in December 2024, and had also approved the establishment of Excise Stations at key entry points such as Sairang and Bairabi. He further informed that on March 14, 2025, 18 vehicles were procured to enhance the mobility of Excise & Narcotics personnel, and provisions were also made for three LMVs to strengthen enforcement operations. To improve manpower, 16 new posts were created in the Excise & Narcotics Department; 28 personnel have already been recruited through direct recruitment, while preparations are underway to recruit an additional 39. During 2025, a total of 319 cases related to various drug-related offences were registered.
Describing drugs as the biggest enemy of society, the Chief Minister emphasized that effective action requires collective efforts from both the government and the community. He noted that a joint operation by the Home Department, Excise & Narcotics Department and Central YMA—Operation Jericho—was launched on September 1, 2025, across 22 border villages. Between September 1, 2025 and January 13, 2026, drugs seized under this operation were valued at approximately ₹196.42 crore.
Home Minister Pu K. Sapdanga highlighted the crucial role played by the Home Department, the Excise & Narcotics Department and the Central YMA in strengthening anti-drug efforts. He expressed appreciation for the cooperation extended by communities across districts, not just in Aizawl.
Excise & Narcotics Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar observed that improved connectivity and movement have led to increased inflow of visitors to Mizoram. However, the presence of drug users and drug-related activities in central and peripheral areas of Aizawl could negatively impact the state’s image. He stressed the need for strong cooperation from other government departments, the YMA and the general public in both drug control and rehabilitation efforts.
Prof. Malsawmliana, General Secretary of the Central YMA, informed that following a public awareness drive launched on December 10, 2025, joint operations with the police between December 10, 2025 and January 12, 2026 resulted in the rounding up of 192 drug users found roaming in public places, of whom 85 were admitted to rehabilitation homes. He also stated that a 24-member Central Anti-Drugs Squad was constituted on January 20, 2026, which will monitor 10 zones within Aizawl city.
The meeting also discussed measures to strengthen rehabilitation facilities for drug users and to equip them with livelihood skills. Additionally, plans to establish more outposts in vulnerable border areas prone to drug trafficking were deliberated.
