Family Accuses Abhishek Banerjee Over Child’s Arm Amputation After Treatment at Sebaashray Health Camp

Kolkata, July 2026 : A fresh controversy has erupted around the ‘Sebaashray’ health camp organised under the patronage of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee after the family of a young girl, whose right arm was amputated following treatment linked to the camp, lodged a formal complaint against him and several others with the Superintendent of Police of the Diamond Harbour Police District.

The complaint, filed on Wednesday, seeks a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that allegedly led to the child’s deteriorating medical condition and eventual amputation. Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered against Abhishek Banerjee and others, with the family alleging that improper treatment and delays at the Sebaashray health camp ultimately resulted in the loss of the girl’s right arm.

The latest complaint comes close on the heels of another similar allegation involving the same health initiative. A few days earlier, Malati Biswas, a resident of Maheshtala in South 24 Parganas district, had approached the state health department claiming that a member of her family lost a leg after allegedly receiving incorrect treatment at the Sebaashray camp. Following that complaint, state Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee reportedly spoke with the family, while Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also contacted them over the phone.

In the latest case, the complainants are the family of Kriti Manna, a resident of the Bishnupur police station area in South 24 Parganas. According to the complaint, the child had been suffering from a rare congenital blood vessel disorder since birth and had been undergoing specialised treatment at several reputed medical institutions. She had received care at multiple hospitals in Kolkata before being taken to Vellore, and from March 2024, her treatment continued under specialists at AIIMS, New Delhi.

The family said that while the child was receiving expert medical care, the financial burden of the prolonged treatment became overwhelming. Hoping to secure monetary assistance, they approached Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee for support to continue treatment at AIIMS.

Instead, they alleged, they were advised to shift the child’s treatment to the Sebaashray health camp. The family claims they were assured that appropriate medical care would be arranged there. However, according to the complaint, the promised assistance never materialised, and they encountered repeated difficulties while trying to communicate with those associated with the programme, including alleged instances of misbehaviour.

The family further alleged that when they later met Abhishek Banerjee personally at a Sebaashray camp and once again appealed for financial help, their request was overlooked and the child was instead referred to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

As the girl’s condition allegedly worsened, her family sought treatment in Delhi and Bengaluru, where doctors reportedly concluded that amputation of her right arm from the shoulder was the only option left to save her life. The family contends that delays, inappropriate treatment and the absence of timely financial support contributed significantly to the tragic outcome.

In addition to the allegations of medical negligence, the family has also accused Abhishek Banerjee of using the child’s photograph in promotional material published in Nirab Biplob, a newspaper featuring activities from his Lok Sabha constituency, without obtaining their permission.

The police are expected to examine the allegations as part of the investigation initiated following the registration of the FIR. The Trinamool Congress has not yet issued an official response to the latest complaint.
