National Voters’ Day 2026 observed in Lunglei
Lunglei, January 2026 : National Voters’ Day (NVD) 2026, the 16th edition, was observed yesterday at the office premises of the Lunglei District Election Officer (DEO), under the leadership of DEO Ms. Navneet Mann.
Addressing the gathering, DEO Ms. Navneet Mann paid tribute to the 16th National Voters’ Day and urged citizens to value their precious right to vote and to actively participate as stakeholders in strengthening India’s democratic system through free and fair elections. She informed that a nationwide Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll will be undertaken this year and appealed to political parties to cooperate in ensuring that the electoral rolls remain accurate, clean, and transparent.
On the occasion, Election Officer Ms. Lalhruaitluangi explained in detail the process and objectives of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. She noted that the last intensive revision was conducted in 2005 and that although routine revisions are carried out annually, a comprehensive and meticulous SIR has not been undertaken for nearly 20 years, making extensive corrections and updates necessary. She explained that house-to-house verification would be conducted to identify inaccuracies in the electoral rolls, highlighted the importance of filling prescribed forms correctly, and emphasized the submission of required documents. She appealed to political parties, civil society organizations, and the public to extend full cooperation to Booth Level Officers (BLOs) during the process.
Government officials, representatives of political parties, and members of civil society organizations attended the programme. The participants also took the National Voters’ Day pledge together.
National Voters’ Day has been observed since 2011 and is celebrated every year on January 25. This year, as January 25 falls on a Sunday, the celebration was held yesterday. The Election Commission of India (ECI), a constitutional body responsible for conducting elections in India, was established on January 25, 1950, a day before India became a Republic, and this date is commemorated annually as National Voters’ Day.
