Ottawa, July 2026 : Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged that his government will do “whatever it takes” to protect the country’s economic interests following the United States’ decision to impose a fresh round of tariffs on selected Canadian imports, escalating trade tensions between the two North American neighbours.
Speaking at a meeting of provincial and territorial leaders in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on Thursday, Carney said Canada would stand firmly behind its workers, farmers, businesses and families in the face of mounting trade pressure from Washington.
“We are in a stronger position than we were when this trade war started 18 months ago,” Carney said. “That strength comes from the determination of Canadians and the collective efforts of provincial and territorial leaders across the country.”
The latest dispute follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose an additional 50 per cent tariff on a range of Canadian products. The move, announced on Monday, was made under Section 338 of the US Tariff Act of 1930, with the White House alleging that Canada had adopted discriminatory trade practices that disadvantaged American businesses.
According to the White House, the tariffs are intended to offset what it described as “the burden and disadvantage on US commerce” arising from Canada’s trade policies. The new duties will apply to selected dairy products, alcoholic beverages, motor vehicles and related goods, and are scheduled to come into effect on August 19.
The Trump administration said the measures were designed to create a level playing field for American exporters, particularly in sectors where it believes Canadian trade barriers have unfairly restricted market access.
Reacting to the announcement earlier this week, Carney described the tariffs as “the latest in a series of unilateral US trade actions” that he said violate the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), the trilateral trade pact governing economic relations among the three countries.
Despite the growing dispute, the Canadian Prime Minister indicated that diplomatic engagement remains a priority. He revealed that he had spoken directly with President Trump on Tuesday and that both sides had agreed to intensify negotiations in an effort to resolve their differences.
Meanwhile, the White House maintained that Canada, along with China, was among the few countries that had chosen to retaliate against US tariff measures instead of pursuing negotiated trade agreements. It claimed that the Trump administration had already secured 18 international trade agreements over the past year and a half, opening new opportunities for American exports.
However, Washington argued that Canada had opted to maintain what it called discriminatory trade barriers rather than address longstanding concerns raised by the United States.
The latest tariff announcement marks another escalation in the ongoing trade dispute and underscores the Trump administration’s continued reliance on tariff measures as part of its “America First” economic strategy.
With negotiations expected to continue in the coming weeks, both governments face mounting pressure to prevent the dispute from affecting broader economic ties, supply chains and cross-border trade that supports millions of jobs in both countries.
