Bangkok, Aug 2026 : Seven people, including the suspected gunman, were killed and 15 others injured after a shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district of Thailand’s Nonthaburi city on Friday, according to local media reports.
The victims included three students and three teachers, while the suspected shooter was also killed in the incident. The 15 injured people were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, the Bangkok Post reported.
The shooting reportedly took place at around 10 a.m. local time when volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation received information about gunshots being fired inside the school premises. Witnesses reported hearing multiple rounds of gunfire, triggering panic among students, teachers and staff.
A student who was inside the school at the time reportedly said that an armed man wearing a purple physical-education uniform fired dozens of rounds within the school compound.
According to initial police information, the suspected attacker was a ninth-grade student who was carrying a 9mm handgun. He reportedly barricaded himself on the third floor of the school’s pink-coloured building following the shooting.
Police later found the suspected shooter dead at the scene, apparently from injuries that were self-inflicted. Authorities have not yet established a clear motive for the attack.
Emergency services and security personnel immediately moved into the school following reports of the shooting. Students and staff were evacuated from the campus as authorities secured the area and worked to ensure that there was no continuing threat.
Forensic police subsequently began examining the scene and collecting evidence as investigators sought to establish the exact sequence of events. Authorities are also expected to investigate how the student obtained the firearm and whether anyone else was involved in the incident.
Officials urged members of the public to stay away from the school and requested people not to livestream the operation. Authorities said unnecessary movement around the area could interfere with the emergency response and forensic investigation.
The incident has once again raised concerns about gun violence and security in educational institutions in Thailand. Investigators are expected to question witnesses and examine available evidence to determine what led to the shooting.
The school shooting comes amid broader security concerns in parts of Thailand. On July 22, five soldiers were killed and six civilians injured after unidentified attackers opened fire and threw a bomb at a security checkpoint in Narathiwat province, according to Xinhua News Agency.
In that incident, six attackers travelling in a pickup truck reportedly approached the entrance of a checkpoint in Narathiwat’s Ra-ngae district before launching an assault using firearms and explosives. The attackers subsequently fled the area.
Security agencies launched a search operation to locate those responsible for the Narathiwat attack.
The latest school shooting, however, remains under active investigation, with authorities focusing on identifying the motive, establishing the circumstances surrounding the gunman’s actions and determining how the weapon was brought onto the school premises.
