Saved Rs 2,000 instalments to buy first cow; now sells nearly 100 litres of milk every day
Raipur, Sept 2026: The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme is not only providing financial support to farmers but also opening new avenues for livelihood and self-employment. Seventy-five-year-old farmer Parshuram Gupta, a resident of Mahapalli village in Raigarh district, saved the financial assistance received under the scheme to start dairy farming and has now emerged as an example of self-reliance through a successful cattle-rearing business.
In 2020, Gupta saved the Rs 2,000 instalments received under PM-KISAN and accumulated around Rs 10,000 as initial capital. He used the amount to purchase his first cow and began cattle rearing. With hard work and experience, he gradually expanded his livestock. Today, he owns 10 cows and produces nearly 100 litres of milk every day, which he sells to a local dairy at Rs 40 per litre. His monthly turnover has now reached approximately Rs 1.20 lakh.
Gupta says he has been interested in animal husbandry since childhood. The financial assistance received through PM-KISAN provided him with the initial capital needed to turn his interest into a source of livelihood.
According to Gupta, even small amounts of financial assistance provided through government schemes can bring significant changes to farmers’ lives when used wisely and in a planned manner. Despite being 75 years old, he continues to pursue dairy farming with enthusiasm and dedication.
What began as a modest effort using savings from PM-KISAN instalments has now developed into a successful livelihood enterprise. Gupta’s experience demonstrates that age need not be a barrier to self-reliance when hard work, experience and available resources are put to effective use.
