Raipur, August 2026 : Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh has carved out a distinctive and lasting identity on the state’s tourism map. The Ravishankar Sagar (Gangrel) Reservoir has reached 90.72 per cent of its total capacity, with the current water level recorded at 347.95 metres (1,141.62 feet) and an inflow of 3,548 cusecs.
Similarly, the Murumsilli Reservoir is almost at full capacity, with 98.82 per cent water storage. Its water level stands at 376.22 metres (1,234.37 feet).
The Dudhawa Reservoir has recorded 82.37 per cent water storage, with a water level of 423.88 metres, while the Sondhur Reservoir has reached 68.90 per cent, with its water level standing at 468.52 metres.
The healthy water levels reflect the district’s rich water resources and have further enhanced the scenic appeal of its tourism destinations.
Tourism growth opens new livelihood opportunities
The major dams under the Dhamtari and Mahanadi Reservoir Project systems are currently holding substantial quantities of water. This has not only helped ensure irrigation and drinking water supplies but has also transformed the surrounding landscape into attractive tourism zones.
With the steady rise in tourist numbers, the district administration has strengthened arrangements at major tourist locations, keeping visitor safety as a priority. Life jackets have been made mandatory during water sports, while trained guides are required to be present to ensure the safety of tourists.
Infrastructure and visitor amenities are also being developed, including organised parking areas, landscaped gardens, resting facilities, clean drinking water and regular sanitation arrangements.
The expansion of tourism activities is also creating new livelihood opportunities for local communities.
