Amaravati, Aug 2026 : The monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature will commence on August 17, with Governor Justice S. Abdul Nazeer issuing the formal notification for convening both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.
According to an official release issued on Monday, proceedings of the Legislative Assembly will begin at 9 a.m. on August 17, while the Legislative Council will commence its sitting at 10 a.m. The session is expected to witness heated discussions on several political and public issues, particularly amid differences between the ruling TDP-led NDA government and the opposition YSR Congress Party.
The YSRCP, currently the lone opposition party in the 175-member Assembly, is likely to stay away from the proceedings over its demand to recognise former Chief Minister and party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy as the Leader of Opposition.
The YSRCP suffered a major electoral setback in the 2024 Assembly elections, winning only 11 seats, while the TDP-led NDA returned to power. Despite its limited strength in the Assembly, the party continues to press for formal recognition of Jagan Mohan Reddy as the Leader of Opposition.
Jagan has repeatedly maintained that there is little purpose in attending Assembly proceedings unless the government grants him the status of Leader of Opposition. He has argued that the recognition would enable the opposition to effectively raise issues concerning the people and participate meaningfully in legislative debates.
The former Chief Minister has also accused the government of undermining democratic conventions by not granting the status. The matter remains pending before the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
Jagan had approached the High Court in July 2024, seeking directions to the state government to designate him as the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.
While the YSRCP may stay away from the Lower House, the party is expected to participate actively in the Legislative Council, where it enjoys a majority. YSRCP legislators are likely to use the Upper House to question the NDA government on several issues and highlight allegations of irregularities in government programmes and recruitment examinations.
One of the major issues expected to be raised by the YSRCP is the alleged irregularities in the Mega DSC-2025 recruitment examination. The party has been conducting protests across Andhra Pradesh, demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into what it describes as a “scam”.
YSRCP MLC Parvathareddy Chandrasekhar Reddy said the party would strongly raise the issue in the Legislative Council. He also reiterated the demand for the resignation of Education Minister Nara Lokesh to facilitate a transparent and independent investigation.
However, the YSRCP has clarified that it is not seeking cancellation of the District Selection Committee examination or removal of candidates who have already been appointed. Instead, the party is demanding a comprehensive investigation into the alleged irregularities and justice for candidates who may have been affected.
The upcoming monsoon session is therefore likely to witness sharp political exchanges, with the ruling alliance defending its policies and the YSRCP seeking to use the Legislative Council to put pressure on the government.
The Assembly session will also provide an opportunity for the government to present its legislative agenda and respond to issues raised by members. With the opposition’s participation in the Assembly uncertain, attention is expected to remain focused on the political dispute over the Leader of Opposition status and the issues that the YSRCP plans to raise in the Council.
