Patna, October 2026 : A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has filed a complaint against Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at Patna’s Kotwali police station over his controversial remark concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s father during a Congress event in Bihar’s capital on Sunday.
Krishna Kumar, a member of the BJP’s state working committee, submitted the complaint seeking an investigation into the statement made by Kharge at Bapu Sabhagar during a programme organised to mark the birth anniversary of Sri Krishna Singh, Bihar’s first Chief Minister.
In his complaint, Kumar said he learnt about the alleged remark through television news coverage and was deeply hurt by the statement. He argued that derogatory comments involving an individual’s family on a public platform were a sensitive matter and emphasised the importance of maintaining dignity and mutual respect in political discourse.
The BJP leader requested the police to examine news reports, video footage and other available evidence to establish the exact words used by Kharge and the context in which they were spoken. He also urged the authorities to initiate appropriate legal action if the investigation found that any law had been violated.
The complaint comes amid escalating political tensions between the BJP and Congress following Kharge’s remarks during his address at the Patna event.
According to reports, Kharge was criticising Prime Minister Modi when a person in the audience reportedly interrupted him, saying that the Prime Minister was not going anywhere. Responding to the interruption, Kharge allegedly said, “Even PM Modi’s father will have to go.”
The remark triggered a political controversy, with BJP leaders accusing the Congress president of crossing the boundaries of acceptable political criticism. Videos of the incident also reportedly showed Congress workers confronting and assaulting the person who interrupted the speech, adding another dimension to the controversy.
The circumstances surrounding the altercation have drawn attention, with the complaint seeking a formal examination of the statement and the available evidence.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President Nitin Nabin criticised Kharge’s remarks. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also condemned the statement and demanded an apology from both Kharge and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Choudhary described the remark as unfortunate and accused the Congress leadership of displaying hostility towards the Prime Minister’s family. He maintained that political differences should not lead to personal attacks involving family members and called for an immediate apology.
The controversy has intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and Congress in Bihar, with the ruling party seeking accountability over the statement and the Congress leadership facing criticism from its political opponents.
The police complaint has requested an investigation into the exact wording and context of Kharge’s remarks, as well as an assessment of whether they have any legal implications. Any further action will depend on the authorities’ examination of the complaint and available evidence.
The episode has once again highlighted the contentious nature of political exchanges between the two parties, with personal remarks at public events becoming a flashpoint in the broader political battle.
