New Delhi, October 2026 : Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta participated in a mega cleanliness drive organised on Sunday under the ‘Chalo Yamuna Campaign’. Under her leadership, an extensive cleanliness drive was carried out at the Yamuna ghats and surrounding areas at all 70 locations across Delhi. Thousands of young people, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), social organisations and public representatives enthusiastically participated in the campaign and volunteered their efforts to clean Maa Yamuna.

The Chief Minister said the enthusiastic participation of thousands of young people, RWAs and various social organisations in response to the ‘Chalo Yamuna’ campaign reflected the faith and sense of responsibility Delhiites have towards Maa Yamuna. Citizens across Delhi were participating in the cleanliness drive on both sides of the river. She said the resolve to clean the Yamuna could be realised only when every section of society actively participated alongside the government’s efforts.

The campaign aimed not only to clean the Yamuna and its ghats but also to raise public awareness about the river’s conservation and encourage people to make cleanliness a part of their daily lives. The Chief Minister urged all Delhiites to join this public participation drive, become ‘Yamuna Praharis’ and contribute to the cleanliness and protection of Maa Yamuna.

CM Rekha Gupta said cleanliness was not merely a campaign but a way of life that everyone must adopt. During the cleaning drive, large quantities of clothes offered to deities, damaged idols, puja materials and other waste were found lying in and around the river. People often leave puja materials and other religious offerings to be immersed in the Yamuna, leading to pollution. She said faith in Maa Yamuna would be meaningful only when people also took responsibility for preserving the river’s clean and pristine state.

The Chief Minister appealed to Delhiites not to leave religious offerings, clothes offered to deities, damaged idols, plastic wrappers or other waste in the Yamuna or at its ghats. She said every citizen must change their behaviour and ensure that no waste reaches the river. Keeping the Yamuna clean is not the responsibility of any single department or organisation but a shared responsibility of society as a whole.

The Chief Minister made it clear that the Delhi government is continuously working at various levels to make the Yamuna pollution-free. Work has begun on setting up sewage treatment plants (STPs) and decentralised sewage treatment plants to tap drains that discharge into the Yamuna. Desilting of drains across Delhi is also underway. Millions of tonnes of silt were removed from drains last year alone. The government is prioritising all necessary work related to cleaning the Yamuna to effectively control the sources of pollution entering the river.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that when thousands of citizens come together for a common cause, public participation becomes the foundation for major change. The ‘Chalo Yamuna Campaign’ represents this collective resolve, with every citizen playing an important role. She appealed to all Delhiites to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings, dispose of waste properly and actively contribute to keeping the Yamuna ghats clean.
