New Delhi, Sept 2026 : The Delhi unit of the Congress on Monday alleged that a large number of names had been deleted from electoral rolls at several polling booths in the Chandni Chowk Assembly constituency during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Devender Yadav said the party would strongly pursue the issue and also take up cases involving eligible voters who had recently become homeless. He said Congress workers would assist affected voters during the claims and objections process and, if required, approach the courts.
The allegations were raised during a training workshop organised for Congress Booth Level Agents (BLA-1) from different Assembly constituencies in Delhi. Party workers were briefed about the SIR process and procedures to assist voters whose names may be missing from the draft electoral roll.
Yadav said the Congress would pay special attention to Dalits, minorities, residents of resettlement colonies and other eligible sections who, according to the party, could potentially be affected by the revision exercise.
The party plans to establish voter assistance centres in slum clusters, Resident Welfare Association (RWA) offices, village chaupals and major markets during the claims and objections period. These centres are expected to help voters check their names and submit the required documents and applications.
AICC Delhi in-charge Qazi Nizamuddin, who shared his experience of working on voters’ rights during the SIR exercise in Uttarakhand, also addressed the workshop.
Nizamuddin said Indian citizenship was the fundamental criterion for inclusion in the electoral roll and argued that homelessness or the absence of a permanent address should not deprive an eligible citizen of the right to vote.
He said the SIR exercise had created anxiety among sections of voters and urged Congress workers to help people protect their electoral rights. The workshop also focused on the legal aspects of the revision process, including responding to notices and resolving discrepancies and anomalies in electoral records.
According to the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office, eligible individuals whose names are missing from the draft electoral roll can seek inclusion by submitting Form 6 along with the prescribed declaration and supporting documents. The claims and objections period is scheduled to continue until September 30, while the final electoral roll is expected to be published on November 4.
The revision exercise has already generated significant voter-related activity across Delhi. Official figures reported earlier this month showed that more than 2.18 lakh Form 6 applications seeking inclusion had been submitted by September 1. More than 51,000 objections had also been filed, while around 47.7 lakh names were excluded from the draft electoral roll published on August 31.
The Congress allegations come amid continuing legal scrutiny of aspects of the Delhi SIR exercise. The Delhi High Court recently considered a petition filed by Devender Yadav and another Congress functionary challenging the requirement that certain previously enrolled voters submit a declaration describing themselves as first-time applicants when seeking inclusion through Form 6.
The Congress has said it will continue monitoring the revision process and provide assistance to voters throughout the claims and objections period.
