Diwali Festive Business Expected to Touch Rs 5 Lakh Crore Nationwide, Delhi Eyes Rs 80,000 Crore

New Delhi, Nov 2026 : India's business turnover during the ongoing Diwali festive season is expected to reach approximately Rs 5 lakh crore, with the national capital alone projected to account for nearly Rs 80,000 crore in trade, according to the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI).

CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal said the festive season had created substantial business opportunities for traders across the country, with consumers showing a growing preference for indigenous products. He said the demand for Indian-made goods, along with increased spending across several sectors, was contributing to the expected rise in festive turnover.

Goyal said traders in Delhi were particularly hopeful of a strong Diwali shopping season after facing disruptions caused by rallies and protests during the previous month. The business community, he added, was looking to recover some of the losses suffered during that period.

According to the CTI estimate, the projected nationwide turnover of Rs 5 lakh crore includes sales generated through Diwali shopping as well as services associated with the festive season.

Citing a recently released report by the country's apex automobile industry body, Goyal said retail automobile sales had recorded an overall growth of 55 per cent across India. Sales of two-wheelers increased by 52 per cent, three-wheelers by 110 per cent, commercial vehicles by 48 per cent, passenger vehicles by 70 per cent and tractors by 58 per cent.

He said the automobile figures reflected increased consumer spending and indicated a positive business outlook during the festive period.

The exchange of gifts has also contributed to the rise in commercial activity. Goyal estimated that nearly five crore gifts, ranging from affordable products to premium items, were exchanged during the Diwali period, generating business for retailers and manufacturers.

CTI said its projections were prepared after consultations with representatives from various industry and trade associations. These included hotel and banquet operators, restaurants, shopping malls, cinema halls, automobile dealers, beauty and salon businesses, tour and travel companies, market associations and other industry bodies.

This year's festive season has also witnessed a strong emphasis on indigenous products. According to the traders' organisation, Indian-made goods have gained popularity among consumers, while GST reforms have helped improve the recognition and market acceptance of locally manufactured products.

Traditional decorative and religious items are among the major categories attracting buyers. These include home decor products, earthen lamps, idols of deities, Diwali puja materials, wall hangings, handicrafts and auspicious symbols such as Shubh-Labh and Om. Products associated with the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, particularly those made by local artisans and craftsmen, are also expected to contribute to sales.

Several other sectors are witnessing increased festive demand. These include fast-moving consumer goods, consumer durables, toys, electronics, electrical appliances, kitchenware, confectionery, snacks, gift items, home furnishings, textiles, readymade garments, footwear, watches, furniture, cosmetics, beauty products and mobile phones and accessories.

Additional categories generating business include utensils, builders' hardware, wood and plywood, paints, glass, dairy products, groceries, food grains, edible oils, pulses, bicycles, wall clocks, gota-zari, sarees and dress materials.

Delhi traders target Rs 80,000 crore

In Delhi, traders are expecting festive-season business worth around Rs 80,000 crore. However, CTI said the period between October 1 and November 1 had been affected by rallies and protests, causing estimated business losses of approximately Rs 14,000 crore in the national capital.

Goyal said commercial activity was now gathering momentum, with large numbers of shoppers visiting markets across the city. Major shopping destinations, including Chandni Chowk, Dariba Kalan, Maliwara, Sadar Bazaar, Kamla Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Model Town, Shalimar Bagh, Wazirpur, Pitampura and Rajouri Garden, have reported increased customer footfall.

Markets in South Extension, Greater Kailash, Green Park, Yusuf Sarai, Lajpat Nagar, Preet Vihar, Shahdara and Laxmi Nagar are also witnessing heightened shopping activity.

Automobile showrooms across different brands have reported significant sales, according to Goyal. Consumers are purchasing mobile phones, clothing, dry fruits, electronics, gifts, decorative products and home furnishings, indicating a revival in retail activity across Delhi.

The CTI expects the festive momentum to provide a boost to traders, manufacturers and service providers as the Diwali shopping season progresses.
