Kolkata, Nov 2026 : Sanmarg Private Limited has acquired a 100 per cent stake in Tehelka.com Private Limited, marking the group's entry into the magazine segment and strengthening its presence in the digital media industry.
According to a company statement, the Sanmarg Group plans to invest further in Tehelka and transform the publication from a fortnightly into a weekly magazine. The publication will continue to be available in both print and digital formats.
Headquartered in Kolkata, Sanmarg is one of Eastern India's leading Hindi media networks and publishes a prominent Hindi daily. The group completed the acquisition in October this year, purchasing the entire shareholding of Tehelka.com from a group of investors who had acquired the company in 2017. The transaction includes all print, digital and intellectual property assets held since that year.
The investors who took over Tehelka in 2017 had also facilitated the exit of former editor Tarun Tejpal and other minority investors. The latest statement said there had been no fresh litigation since their takeover and confirmed that Tejpal had no involvement in Tehelka or its operations in any capacity.
Tejpal had earlier stepped aside as editor following allegations of sexual assault by a colleague. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced.
As part of the new ownership arrangement, Arvind Chaturvedi has been appointed chief editor to lead the publication and oversee its editorial operations.
The statement also clarified the responsibilities relating to Tehelka's earlier legal matters. Anant Media Private Limited, the erstwhile owner, will continue to contest all previous litigations involving the publication and will retain sole responsibility for earlier guarantees.
Sanmarg further assured existing subscribers that lifetime subscribers of Tehelka will continue to receive the magazine in print and retain access to digital subscriptions, wherever applicable.
Emphasising its commitment to regulatory compliance and responsible journalism, the group said it intended to follow all applicable government rules, regulations and standards.
"We also want to fully comply with all government rules and regulations, and all applicable rules, standards and regulations as they stand today, to make a meaningful experience of serious journalism for the Indian public," the statement said.
The acquisition marks a new phase for Tehelka under Sanmarg's ownership, with plans to increase publication frequency while maintaining its presence across traditional print and digital platforms.
