Washington, November 2026 : US President Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller, one of his closest advisers and a key architect of his immigration policies, as the next White House Chief of Staff, replacing Susie Wiles, who will move to the President's political operation.
Trump announced the appointment on his Truth Social platform, stating that Miller would assume the new responsibility from Monday, November 9, 2026. Miller was serving as Deputy Chief of Staff and overseeing domestic policy in the administration.
"I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026," Trump wrote.
The President also praised Wiles for her performance and confirmed her departure from the White House position. "Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation. I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff — She has done a great job!" he said.
Trump, however, did not specify Wiles's new designation or the responsibilities she would undertake in the political operation.
The White House separately confirmed Miller's appointment as the 33rd Chief of Staff and released statements of support from Cabinet members, Republican lawmakers and conservative allies.
Miller's elevation places one of the most influential figures in Trump's political circle at the head of the White House staff operation. Having played a central role in shaping the administration's immigration and domestic policy agenda, he is expected to remain closely involved in advancing the President's priorities.
The appointment, however, drew sharply contrasting reactions from Republicans and Democrats. While administration officials welcomed Miller's promotion and highlighted his experience and commitment, Democratic leaders criticised the decision, particularly his role in shaping the administration's immigration policies.
Democratic Senator Alex Padilla of California said the appointment indicated that Trump intended to intensify his administration's immigration agenda.
"Trump is doubling down – so will we," Padilla said.
He added that Democrats would use congressional oversight, investigations, subpoenas and their influence over federal funding to scrutinise the administration and hold officials accountable.
Padilla accused Miller of being instrumental in policies involving family separations, immigration raids and arrest quotas. He also alleged that enforcement operations had created fear in neighbourhoods, schools and workplaces across California. However, his statement did not announce any specific investigation or subpoena.
Vice President JD Vance welcomed Miller's appointment, describing him as a patriot capable of making a significant contribution to the administration. He also thanked Wiles for her friendship and service.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Wiles's leadership and expressed his willingness to work with Miller to advance the President's agenda.
FBI Director Kash Patel, who said he had known Miller since the first Trump administration, also endorsed the appointment. He expressed confidence in Miller's ability to lead the White House team and praised his commitment to the country.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung described Miller as one of the strongest advocates of Trump's political programme, saying his appointment would help the administration deliver on its priorities during the remainder of the President's second term.
Miller has held senior positions in both Trump administrations and emerged as a prominent voice on immigration and domestic policy. His approach has frequently drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers and immigration policy opponents.
Wiles, meanwhile, played a significant role in managing Trump's successful 2024 presidential campaign before becoming the first woman to serve as White House Chief of Staff. The position involves overseeing White House staff, coordinating policy initiatives, managing the President's schedule and regulating access to senior advisers.
Her transition to Trump's political operation marks a change in the administration's senior leadership structure as Miller prepares to take charge of the White House staff.
