Kathmandu, Aug 2026: The Embassy of India in Nepal has issued emergency contact numbers for assistance and information concerning Indian nationals affected by devastating flash floods that struck several parts of Nepal on Wednesday.
In a post on X, the Indian Embassy urged those seeking help or information regarding affected Indian citizens to contact its emergency numbers. The numbers provided are +977 985 131 6807 and +977 970 910 7500. The advisory comes as rescue agencies and local authorities continue efforts to locate people stranded or reported missing following the sudden flooding.
A massive flash flood swept through the Bhote Koshi River on Wednesday morning, causing extensive destruction in northern Nepal. Several people are feared dead, while widespread damage has been reported in districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. Homes, roads, markets and key infrastructure have been damaged or washed away by the force of the floodwaters.
The situation in Rasuwa has raised particular concern because of the large number of tourists reported missing from the region. According to preliminary figures released by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), 384 tourists and other individuals have been reported missing. The figure includes 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens.
More than 100 Indians are among the foreign nationals reported missing, according to the tourism board. The missing foreign tourists are believed to include citizens of India, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Malaysia, South Africa and the Netherlands.
The NTB, however, clarified that the figures remain preliminary and are being verified. Authorities are cross-checking information with travel agencies, local administrations and other agencies involved in the rescue and relief operations. The nationalities of several missing travellers have also not yet been confirmed.
Preliminary information suggests that the missing travellers were associated with nine different travel agencies. The flooding has severely disrupted movement across the Rasuwa region, raising concerns about the safety of tourists, residents and others who were present in areas hit by the sudden surge of water.
Local authorities, the Nepal Army and other emergency and rescue agencies have been mobilised to assess the damage, search for missing people and provide assistance to those affected. Rescue teams are also working to establish the whereabouts of tourists who remain unaccounted for.
Earlier, Prime Minister Balen Shah convened a meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management to review the latest situation in the flood-hit areas. The meeting also assessed ongoing search, rescue and relief operations.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting affected citizens and ensuring timely relief. Authorities have been directed to maintain heightened vigilance in vulnerable areas and move displaced people to safer locations wherever necessary.
Rasuwa appears to have suffered some of the worst damage, with floodwaters sweeping away houses and damaging markets, hydropower facilities, roads and other vital infrastructure. Rescue and relief operations are expected to continue as authorities assess the full scale of destruction and work to locate those still missing.
