India End 44-Year Wait for Asian Games Women’s Hockey Gold

Lalremsiami’s first-quarter strike and Savita Punia’s crucial save help India beat defending champions China 1-0 and seal direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

Kakamigahara, Oct 2026 : India ended a 44-year wait for the Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over defending champions China in the final of the Aichi-Nagoya Games on Friday, reclaiming the continental title and securing direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal in the 10th minute, producing a powerful reverse-hit finish to give India an early lead. The strike came at the end of a well-constructed attacking move, with Salima Tete delivering a precise pass into the circle before Sakshi created the opportunity for Lalremsiami.

The Indian forward made no mistake, unleashing a fierce reverse hit that flew into the roof of the net and left the Chinese goalkeeper with little chance of stopping it.

India’s early advantage, however, was soon tested as China began to dominate possession and put sustained pressure on the Indian defence. The hosts repeatedly entered the Indian circle and created opportunities, but India’s defenders remained organised and determined to protect their narrow lead.

Navneet Kaur produced an important goalline clearance when China threatened from a penalty-corner situation, preventing what could have been a major setback for India.

The biggest moment of the first half came when China earned a penalty stroke. Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia responded with a brilliant one-handed save, reading the attempt perfectly to deny the Chinese side an equaliser. Her intervention proved crucial as India went into the half-time break with their 1-0 advantage intact.

China continued to push forward after the restart and earned multiple penalty corners during the third quarter. India’s players repeatedly put themselves in the line of fire, blocking shots and preventing China from finding the decisive final touch.

Salima Tete and her teammates played a key role in maintaining India’s defensive structure as the Chinese attack intensified. Despite spending long periods under pressure, India remained disciplined and avoided conceding a goal.

The final quarter saw China commit even more players forward in search of an equaliser. In a desperate attempt to level the score, the defending champions withdrew their goalkeeper and introduced an additional outfield player.

India, however, held their composure during the tense closing stages. The team managed possession effectively, defended their circle with determination and denied China a clear opportunity to take the contest into a shootout.

The triumph marked a historic turnaround for Indian women’s hockey. India had won their only previous Asian Games women’s hockey gold in 1982 in New Delhi, when the sport made its debut at the continental event. Since then, India had reached the final twice, in 1998 and 2018, but had to settle for silver medals on both occasions.

The gold in Kakamigahara therefore ends one of the longest waits for an Asian Games title in Indian women’s hockey and adds another major achievement to the team’s campaign.

India had been impressive throughout the tournament, finishing at the top of Pool A with four wins from four matches. They also registered a commanding 7-1 victory over Pakistan during the pool stage before producing another attacking display in the semi-finals, where they defeated Japan 7-2.

The 1-0 victory over China ultimately combined India’s attacking quality with defensive resilience. More importantly, the Asian Games title earned India a direct berth at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, providing an additional reward for a memorable campaign.
