Indian Women’s League 2026-27 to Begin on November 13; Eight Clubs to Compete for Title

New Delhi, October 2026 : Indian women’s club football is set for another competitive season, with the 2026-27 edition of the Indian Women’s League (IWL), the country’s premier women’s football competition, scheduled to begin on November 13. Eight clubs will compete for the title, with matches set to be played in Kolkata, Jamshedpur and Bengaluru. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced the schedule for the new season on Monday, October 19.

The IWL provides a national platform for women footballers to showcase their skills and gain experience at the highest level of domestic club competition. The upcoming season will feature established teams alongside two promoted clubs, adding a fresh dimension to the title race.

Eight Clubs Set for Title Battle

Six teams that competed in the previous season will return for the 2026-27 campaign. They are East Bengal FC, Sethu FC, Kickstart FC, Nita Football Academy, Gokulam Kerala FC and Garhwal United FC.

They will be joined by HOPS FC and Juba Sangha FC, both of whom earned promotion after finishing in the top two positions in the 2025-26 IWL 2 competition. HOPS FC finished first, while Juba Sangha FC secured second place, securing their entry into the top division.

Their promotion highlights the role of the second-tier competition in creating a pathway for clubs to progress to the country’s premier women’s league.

East Bengal Aim to Defend Their Crown

Defending champions East Bengal FC will enter the new season looking to retain their title after an impressive campaign in 2025-26. The team won 13 of its 14 matches, suffering just one defeat, and established itself as the side to beat.

East Bengal’s Fazila Ikwaput was among the standout performers last season, scoring 20 goals to finish as the league’s leading scorer. Her goal-scoring record made her one of the key players to watch, and her performances will draw attention again as the defending champions begin their title defence.

Nita Football Academy’s Pyari Xaxa and Sethu FC’s Linda Kom Serto also attracted attention with their attacking displays. Their contributions, along with the performances of other leading players, are expected to be closely followed by supporters during the upcoming campaign.

56 Matches Across Three Cities

The 2026-27 season will feature a total of 56 matches and is scheduled to conclude on January 23, 2027. The competition will follow a double round-robin format, with every team facing each of the other seven clubs twice.

The format is designed to give teams repeated opportunities to test their strengths against their rivals over the course of the season. Matches in Kolkata, Jamshedpur and Bengaluru will also bring the competition to different football centres, potentially helping broaden its reach and visibility.

With eight clubs competing across the campaign, consistency, squad depth and performances in head-to-head encounters will be important factors in determining the eventual champions.

AIFF Emphasises Women’s Football Development

AIFF Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayan described the Indian Women’s League as an important foundation for the development of women’s football in India. He said the competition offers players from across the country an opportunity to establish themselves on the national stage.

He also highlighted the significance of IWL 2 in helping emerging players and clubs progress to the top division. The federation aims to expand opportunities for women footballers and strengthen the domestic football structure through its league system.

The promotion of HOPS FC and Juba Sangha FC provides a practical example of how the second division can support club development and create a route into the top tier.

15-Year Partnership to Support Commercial Growth

In a move aimed at strengthening the commercial structure of women’s football, the AIFF has entered into a 15-year partnership with Capri Sports. Under the arrangement, the two organisations will work together on the commercial development and marketing rights of both the Indian Women’s League and IWL 2.

Capri Sports representative Apurva Gupta said the company would focus on developing a stronger platform for women’s football, enhancing the competition’s visibility and creating a supportive environment for players and clubs.

The partnership is expected to place greater emphasis on the leagues’ commercial development, helping build their identity and expand their reach among supporters and stakeholders.

A Platform for Emerging Talent

The new season will offer young Indian women footballers valuable opportunities to compete against established clubs and gain experience in demanding matches. The participation of promoted teams also underlines the importance of a structured domestic pathway for clubs aspiring to reach the highest level.

As the November 13 opening approaches, attention will turn to East Bengal’s title defence, the challenge posed by the other established teams and the performance of the two newcomers. With 56 matches scheduled across three cities, the 2026-27 Indian Women’s League will provide another opportunity to showcase women’s football talent and strengthen the domestic game.
