Srinagar, Oct 2026 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday flagged off the third edition of the Kashmir Marathon, bringing together runners from India and abroad for a major sporting event showcasing the region’s scenic beauty, tourism potential and cultural heritage.
According to the J&K Tourism Department, the marathon received 1,807 online registrations, including 1,221 participants from Jammu and Kashmir, 513 from other parts of India and 73 international athletes representing 12 countries.
The event aims to strengthen Kashmir’s profile as a destination for sports tourism while highlighting its natural landscapes, rich traditions and growing potential to host national and international sporting competitions.
Full and Half Marathons Around Dal Lake
The Kashmir Marathon featured two main categories: a 42-km full marathon and a 21-km half marathon. The full marathon began at 6.30 am, followed by the half marathon at 7.45 am.
The route offered participants a picturesque running experience around the famous Dal Lake, with the majestic Zabarwan mountain range providing a dramatic backdrop. Runners also passed stretches lined with magnificent Chinar trees and the surroundings of the historic Nishat Mughal Garden.
The pleasant late-autumn weather, accompanied by gentle sunshine, provided favourable conditions for participants and added to the atmosphere of the sporting occasion.
To encourage greater participation by local athletes, organisers introduced a separate prize category for runners from Jammu and Kashmir. The initiative is intended to recognise local talent and motivate more residents to participate in long-distance running.
Marathon Expo Promotes Kashmiri Handicrafts and Local Products
Alongside the marathon, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Kashmir Marathon Expo, featuring 20 stalls displaying traditional handicrafts, handloom products, agricultural produce and other locally manufactured goods.
The exhibition provided local artisans, entrepreneurs and businesses with an opportunity to showcase their products to visiting athletes, tourists and other participants.
By combining sports with the promotion of indigenous products, the initiative seeks to create additional opportunities for local businesses and strengthen the connection between tourism, cultural heritage and economic development.
The participation of runners from different parts of India and overseas also offers local producers a platform to introduce Kashmir’s traditional craftsmanship and products to a wider audience.
The event is part of broader efforts to position Jammu and Kashmir as a destination for sporting events while creating opportunities for tourism-related enterprises and local communities.
Traffic Restrictions in Place for Marathon
Traffic authorities announced extensive restrictions and diversions across parts of Srinagar to facilitate the event and ensure the safety of runners and commuters.
Motorists were advised to plan their journeys, follow official traffic advisories and use designated alternative routes to minimise inconvenience during the marathon.
Authorities also prioritised the movement of emergency services, including ambulances and fire tenders, during the restrictions.
Commuters requiring traffic-related assistance were advised to contact the Srinagar Traffic Police helpline at 103.
With international participation, a scenic route and a parallel showcase of local products, the third Kashmir Marathon highlighted the region’s potential to combine sports, tourism and cultural promotion. The event also provided a platform to encourage local runners and bring greater attention to Kashmir’s natural attractions and traditional industries.
