New York, Aug 2026 : Madison Square Garden, the iconic New York arena where RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat is scheduled to address an event on Saturday, has a unique place in American public life, having hosted major political gatherings, sporting contests, religious programmes and some of the biggest names in entertainment.
Bhagwat will speak at the venue where Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his high-profile public appearance in the United States as India’s Prime Minister following his 2014 election victory. Modi addressed a packed gathering at the arena during his visit to New York for a United Nations high-level meeting.
The 22,000-capacity venue was filled with supporters and others eager to hear Modi, creating one of the most prominent public receptions for an Indian leader in the United States.
Madison Square Garden has also featured prominently in American political history. US President Donald Trump made a high-profile return to New York at the arena in 2024, while former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W Bush were formally nominated as their parties’ presidential candidates at conventions held there.
The Republican National Convention was hosted at the venue in 2004, while the Democratic Party held its conventions there in 1976, 1980 and 1992.
Located in the heart of Manhattan, about ten blocks south of Times Square, the approximately 76,000-square-metre complex is also an architectural landmark. The arena sits directly above Pennsylvania Station, one of the busiest transportation hubs in the United States, where long-distance trains, commuter rail services and subway lines converge.
Because of its importance and the high-profile events it hosts, Madison Square Garden operates under stringent security arrangements. Security measures have at times included facial-recognition technology to identify and process people entering the facility.
One of the venue’s defining characteristics is its remarkable versatility. Its main floor can be transformed into an ice rink for hockey, a basketball court, a political stage, a boxing or wrestling ring, a concert venue or a space for religious gatherings and other major events.
The arena has also been associated with major cultural moments. More recently, it drew widespread attention when singer Taylor Swift married American football player Travis Kelce there in July, attracting tens of thousands of fans around the venue.
Madison Square Garden is home to two major New York sports franchises — the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League and the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association.
Over the decades, the venue has also welcomed some of the world’s most celebrated musicians and performers. Artists including John Lennon, George Harrison, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Led Zeppelin, Victoria Beckham and the Spice Girls have performed before audiences at the iconic arena.
