Scheme to begin as a pilot project in 100 schools and be expanded to 1,086 schools in phases
Our aim is to provide students immediate first aid, basic health support and counselling when needed: CM Rekha Gupta
New Delhi, August 2026 : The Delhi government has decided to establish medical facilities in government schools with the aim of strengthening the safety, first aid and overall health of students. The initiative will initially be launched as a pilot project in 100 government schools. Based on the outcome and evaluation of the pilot project, it will be expanded in phases to 1,086 government schools. Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta said dedicated ‘School Medical Rooms’ will be set up in government schools under the initiative. These medical rooms will provide students with immediate first aid, temporary rest, basic health support, age-appropriate health guidance and counselling. For girl students, the medical rooms will also provide a safe and private space during menstrual discomfort.
Trained health workers to provide first aid
The services of trained health workers will be engaged through an approved outsourcing arrangement to provide primary health support in the medical rooms. Along with providing first aid and basic health support, the health workers will assist students with counselling. They will also support health-awareness activities and assist in maintaining relevant records.
Existing school infrastructure to be used
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the Delhi government has designed the initiative as a low-cost, high-impact arrangement. Existing school infrastructure will be utilised for the purpose. An allocation of Rs 5 crore has been made in this year’s Budget Estimates (BE) for the pilot implementation of the scheme. Based on the evaluation and outcome of the pilot project, the additional funds required for the scheme will be provided in the coming years.
Safe and inclusive school environment in line with NEP 2020
The programme is in line with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for a safe, inclusive and health-supportive school environment. It aims to promote the physical and emotional well-being of students while minimising disruption to their studies. Under the pilot project, medical room facilities will first be introduced in 100 government schools. Based on its outcome and evaluation, the initiative will be expanded in phases to 1,086 government schools. Through this initiative, arrangements will be made to provide students in government schools with first aid, basic health support, health guidance and counselling, as well as temporary rest when required. Girl students will also have access to a safe and private space during menstrual discomfort.
