The Madhya Pradesh Government is working in a planned and phased manner to provide better, safer and affordable bus transport facilities to public and modernise the state’s transport system. Under Madhya Pradesh Transport Vision 2030-31, emphasis is being placed on expanding bus services from cities to villages, ensuring availability of buses on schedule, introducing digital and mobile app-based ticketing systems and promoting electric buses. The objective of this initiative is to make travel easier for people and public transport more convenient.
In accordance with the recommendations of the Passenger Transport Vision Summit-2026, Mukhya Mantri Sugam Parivahan Sewa has been launched in the state. A total of 351 buses are operating in seven major cities of Madhya Pradesh. The scheme focuses on providing better facilities to passengers. Digital technology is currently making the ticketing experience easier for bus passengers. Online ticket booking through the Chalo mobile app is also available for city buses in Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur.
More Than 5,000 Bus Routes to Be Developed, Over 3 Million Passengers to Benefit
As per the Vision 2030-31 of Madhya Pradesh Passenger Transport and Infrastructure Limited, a target has been set for a major expansion of public bus transport in state. More than 15,000 public buses will be operated and over 5,000 bus routes will be developed. According to the vision, the target is to connect more than 3 million passengers with bus services every day.
More than 180 bus depots and terminals will be developed across the state. In a phased manner, 75 percent of the state’s Gram Panchayats are being directly connected to the bus network. This will provide people in rural areas with better transport facilities for education, employment, medical treatment, business and other essential activities.
Bus Locations on Mobile Phones and Digital Ticketing Facilities
Use of digital technology is being expanded to make the state’s public transport system modern and convenient. Under this initiative, arrangements are being made to provide passengers with digital information on their mobile phones about bus locations, arrival and departure times and designated routes.
A bus pass facility has also been introduced for city bus passengers in Indore. Digital tickets and online payments have made ticket purchasing easier for passengers. Digital monitoring of tickets will bring transparency to fare revenue and help curb irregularities. Passenger safety is being improved through the installation of CCTV cameras and other security systems on buses.
Bus Operations under PPP Model
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model is being adopted to improve state’s bus transport system. Under this arrangement, private bus operators are being selected through a transparent tendering process. Clear rules have been established to ensure bus operations, schedules, passenger safety and service quality.
Arrangements are being made to provide bus operators with necessary facilities for bus maintenance, charging and operations. Emphasis is also being placed on training drivers, conductors and other related personnel to ensure safe, punctual and better transport services for passengers.
More Buses and Trips to Improve Passenger Convenience
Bus routes and operating schedules will be improved according to passenger requirements. This will help increase bus services in areas where passengers have to wait for long periods. The development of safe bus stands, clean waiting areas and better passenger terminals will provide greater convenience to all passengers, including women, elderly people and children.
Options such as discounts on tickets to encourage digital payments and special facilities for regular passengers are also being considered. These efforts are aimed at making public bus transport more convenient and attractive so that passengers find public buses a more convenient option than private vehicles.
Electric Buses to Promote Environmental Conservation
Electric buses and vehicles running on clean fuels are being promoted to make the state’s transport system environmentally friendly. The operation of electric buses will reduce carbon emissions by 70,000 tonnes annually. Attention is also being given to develop necessary charging facilities and modern bus depots.
The objective of Mukhya Mantri Sugam Parivahan Sewa is to provide citizens with a bus service that is punctual, affordable and attentive to safety and convenience during travel. This initiative of the Transport Department will make commuting easier in rural areas as well as cities.
