Mumbai, October 2026 : Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians and head coach Mahela Jayawardene have mutually agreed to end their association, bringing an end to a coaching tenure that delivered three IPL titles. The franchise is now preparing to appoint a new coach ahead of the next season.
The decision follows a disappointing 2026 campaign in which Mumbai Indians managed only four victories and finished ninth in the standings. Injuries, player availability concerns and reports of dressing-room unrest contributed to a challenging season for the franchise.
According to reports, Mumbai Indians have shortlisted multiple candidates for the vacant position, with interviews expected to take place in the coming week. Jayawardene is unlikely to continue with the franchise in another role.
The departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Mumbai Indians' history. Jayawardene first took charge as head coach in 2017 and guided the team to IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020. The franchise's consecutive championship victories in 2019 and 2020 further established his reputation as one of the most successful coaches in the competition.
After stepping away from the head coach's position, the former Sri Lanka captain served as Mumbai Indians' global head of performance from 2022 to 2024. In that role, he oversaw coaching, scouting and strategic planning across the franchise's international teams.
Jayawardene returned as Mumbai Indians head coach in 2024 under a two-plus-one-year arrangement. The team reached the playoffs in 2025 but struggled to maintain its momentum during the 2026 season.
Reflecting on his association with the franchise, Jayawardene described Mumbai Indians as a special part of his professional journey and thanked the players, coaching staff, supporters and owners for their backing.
“Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now. The players, coaching team, the incredible support of the #OneFamily and above all the fans have made this an experience I will always treasure,” he said.
Jayawardene recalled the memorable moments and challenges shared during his time with the organisation. He also expressed gratitude to franchise owners Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their trust, support and friendship.
“I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead,” he added.
Mumbai Indians owner Nita M. Ambani also acknowledged Jayawardene's contribution, praising his leadership, integrity and commitment to the franchise.
“Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us,” she said.
On behalf of the franchise, Ambani thanked Jayawardene for his years of service and said the memories created during their association would always be valued.
“Mahela will always be a part of our #OneFamily, and we wish him every happiness and success in the journey ahead,” she added.
Mumbai Indians now face an important transition as they begin preparations for the next IPL season. The appointment of a new head coach is expected to shape the team's strategy, squad planning and approach as the franchise seeks to recover from its disappointing 2026 campaign and return to title contention.
