Chandigarh, September 2026 : Baba Lakha Singh, head of the Nanaksar sect, on Tuesday met Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann in Chandigarh and praised the state government for passing the historic Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satikar (Amendment) Act, 2026.
Baba Lakha Singh said the legislation would provide solace to the Sikh community, whose sentiments had been hurt by repeated incidents of sacrilege, and would help prevent such incidents in the future. During the meeting, he presented Chief Minister Mann with a siropa as a mark of respect and conveyed blessings from the Guru Ghar.
Mann said it was the primary responsibility of his government to uphold the respect, sanctity and maryada of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, describing the service as a blessing entrusted to him by the Almighty.
Baba Lakha Singh said the passage of the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satikar (Amendment) Act, 2026 was an important and exemplary step that had provided relief to the Sikh community following repeated incidents of sacrilege.
He said the legislation reflected the Punjab government’s commitment to protecting the dignity and sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Strengthening the law against incidents of sacrilege would help uphold the dignity of the “Shabad Guru” and ensure that such offences were dealt with firmly, he added.
Baba Lakha Singh presented the siropa to Mann in recognition of the Chief Minister’s service to humanity and particularly to the Sikh community.
Mann thanked Baba Lakha Singh for his blessings and reiterated that protecting the sanctity and maryada of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was the state government’s foremost responsibility.
“Our government is fully committed to following the path shown by the great Sikh Gurus for the progress of Punjab and the prosperity of its people. We are continuously working to maintain peace, communal harmony and brotherhood in the state and to further strengthen the bonds of social harmony,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister said he considered himself fortunate to have been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satikar Amendment Act, 2026, which provides for stringent punishment for sacrilege.
“I hope this law will help prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future and ensure that no one dares to commit such an offence,” Mann said.
He added that he did not consider himself the person who had enacted the legislation, saying the service had been entrusted to him by the Guru Sahib, who is regarded as omnipotent and omnipresent.
“I consider myself a humble servant of Guru Sahib, to whom this responsibility has been entrusted,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister said Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was regarded as a father figure by every Sikh and that preserving its sanctity was a collective responsibility.
“If the state government cannot ensure the dignity and sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, no one else can. Therefore, we are committed to taking every possible step to protect the sanctity of the Shabad Guru Sahib,” he said.
Mann said the state was fortunate to have been entrusted with the responsibility of passing such historic legislation and expressed hope that it would help prevent such incidents in the future.
Sharing pictures and details of his meeting with Baba Lakha Singh, Mann said the Nanaksar chief had appreciated the state government’s Jagat Jyot Satikar Act, 2026 and presented him with a siropa as a blessing from the Guru Ghar.
Mann once again thanked Baba Lakha Singh and reiterated that maintaining the respect and maryada of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was the government’s fundamental duty. He said his government remained committed to following the teachings of the Gurus and saints to promote Punjab’s development, peace, harmony and brotherhood.
