Doctors detected the localised nodule at an early stage; surgery is scheduled in the coming days at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
Vatican City, October 2026 : Pope Leo XIV has announced that he will undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a small, localised nodule in his lung, which doctors detected during recent medical examinations.
Addressing the faithful gathered for the traditional Angelus prayer on Sunday, the Pope said the nodule had been identified at a very early stage and was well-localised. Following medical advice, he has decided to proceed with surgery at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome.
“During some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized,” Pope Leo XIV said.
He explained that his medical team had recommended surgical intervention and that he had agreed to follow their advice. The operation has been scheduled for the coming days, although no further details about the procedure or the expected recovery period were provided in the announcement.
The Pope also expressed gratitude to people who had offered him spiritual support and requested their prayers as he prepares for the operation.
“The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it,” he said, thanking the faithful for their closeness and support.
The announcement came during the Pope’s weekly Angelus address, a regular Sunday gathering at which he speaks to pilgrims and visitors and offers prayers and reflections.
The Vatican has not provided additional information about the nodule beyond the Pope’s statement that it was detected early and was localised. Further details about the surgery and his subsequent schedule were not immediately available.
Pope Leo XIV’s announcement prompted prayers and expressions of support from the faithful as he prepares to undergo the recommended medical procedure.
