IRGC Navy warns vessels against using unauthorised routes as President Masoud Pezeshkian says Tehran remains committed to negotiations with Washington despite previous attacks.
Tehran, Oct 2026 : Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has claimed that a supertanker attempting to leave the Strait of Hormuz through an unauthorised route suffered a massive explosion after striking naval mines. The vessel, which was reportedly carrying crude oil, caught fire following the blast, according to the Iranian military.
In a statement published by the IRGC’s official news outlet, Sepah News, the navy said the tanker had switched off its navigation and GPS systems while attempting to cross the strategic waterway. It described the route as high-risk and warned that vessels violating Iran’s regulations could face similar consequences. The claims could not be independently verified.
The latest incident follows another report issued by the IRGC Navy on Friday, when it said its forces had struck a large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier identified as NV Sunshine. According to the Iranian military, the vessel was attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz through an “illegal” route south of the waterway.
The IRGC Navy claimed that the incident caused a fire in the ship’s engine room and propulsion system. It blamed the United States military for contributing to maritime incidents and escalating tensions in the region.
The Iranian force also warned that action against vessels using unauthorised routes would not be confined to the Strait of Hormuz, adding that ships violating its restrictions would face punishment.
The developments come amid continuing tensions in the region, where the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical route for global energy shipments.
Separately, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that Tehran would not withdraw from negotiations with the United States, despite what he described as repeated American attacks during previous rounds of dialogue.
During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, on Thursday, Pezeshkian said Iran remained committed to diplomatic engagement.
He stated that Iran had submitted proposals during negotiations and that Washington had subsequently presented counterproposals. Tehran had reviewed and revised those proposals, he said, adding that the next step would be to finalise them through existing mediators.
Pezeshkian emphasised that Iran would continue pursuing dialogue even after previous confrontations between the two countries.
Iran tightened restrictions on passage through the Strait of Hormuz on February 28, barring safe passage for vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States following joint strikes on Iranian territory, according to the report.
The latest claims underscore the fragile security situation around the strategic waterway and the continuing challenges facing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington.
