New Delhi, October 2026 : Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday reacted to an FIR lodged against him following his over nine-hour sit-in at Akashvani Bhavan, saying he already had 45 FIRs and would not mind having 100.
Gandhi made the remarks before leaving for Jantar Mantar with INDIA bloc leaders to continue their protest over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
“I have 45 FIRs against me. My goal is to have 100. I want 100 FIRs to be filed against me. Every FIR is a medal for me,” Gandhi told reporters.
Delhi Police has received a complaint against Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc MPs who accompanied them during Tuesday’s protest. Officials said the complaint relates to allegations that the leaders forcibly entered Akashvani Bhavan during the demonstration.
Gandhi said around 300 MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had sought to meet the Chief Election Commissioner on Tuesday but were not allowed to do so.
“As I said yesterday, around 300 MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha wanted to meet the CEC yesterday. He did not meet us. The Delhi Police stopped us, and yesterday they said that we cannot protest there,” he said.
Gandhi said the Opposition would therefore continue its protest at the designated site at Jantar Mantar.
“So, our plan today is to go to the designated protest site, Jantar Mantar, and sit there again and tell the country that, for us, Gyanesh Kumar is not the legitimate Election Commissioner of the country,” he said.
He also repeated his allegations made on Tuesday, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Gyanesh Kumar had undermined the country’s democratic system. Gandhi called the issue “treason” and demanded Kumar’s resignation.
Meanwhile, a bus carrying Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc MPs headed towards Jantar Mantar for the planned demonstration.
Congress MPs Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Deepender Singh Hooda, Imran Pratapgarhi and Imran Masood were seen on top of the bus as the leaders proceeded towards the protest venue.
Earlier, Kharge hosted a lunch meeting for INDIA bloc leaders at a restaurant in Janpath. The meeting was followed by the decision to continue the Opposition’s agitation at Jantar Mantar.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Kharge said the Opposition would maintain pressure on the Election Commission over its concerns regarding the electoral-roll revision.
“Today, we will hold a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar. Until our demands are met, we will continue to hold such protests,” Kharge said.
The protests follow Tuesday’s demonstration by INDIA bloc MPs, who marched towards the Election Commission seeking to raise their concerns over the SIR exercise. The Opposition has alleged irregularities in the revision process, while the Election Commission has maintained that electoral-roll revision is part of the constitutional process for ensuring accurate voter lists.
