Rain Delays Toss in Decisive Fifth T20I Between India and West Indies in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, October 2026 : Persistent rain delayed the toss in the fifth and final T20 International between India and the West Indies at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, casting uncertainty over the series decider as showers continued to affect the city.

The toss was scheduled for 6.30 pm, but the covers remained firmly in place as match officials confirmed the delay. The drizzle subsequently intensified, raising concerns about a possible washout at a venue hosting its first international fixture in two years.

“The toss has been delayed for the fifth and final T20I between the West Indies and India in Bengaluru due to rain,” Cricket West Indies (CWI) said in an update.

Both teams had arrived at the stadium as scheduled but were unable to begin their warm-ups, remaining inside their respective dressing rooms. The stands were around half full, with the stadium DJ attempting to keep spectators entertained as they waited for the weather to improve.

Bengaluru has experienced persistent showers over the past few days following the onset of the northeast monsoon, with further rainfall forecast for Saturday night.

However, the stadium's renowned SubAir drainage system has offered some hope of a quick resumption if the rain subsides. The system played a crucial role in helping rescue the India-New Zealand Test match in October 2024 after rain interrupted proceedings.

The fixture also marks Bengaluru's return to the international cricket calendar after a prolonged absence. The stadium had remained outside the international schedule following the tragic stampede in June 2025 during celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Indian Premier League title triumph. The incident claimed 11 lives.

There is considerable significance attached to Saturday's contest, with the five-match series evenly poised at 2-2. Both sides will be eager to secure a series victory in the final encounter.

India, the reigning men's T20 World Cup champions, will be keen to avoid another bilateral series defeat against the West Indies. The Caribbean side had beaten India 3-2 in a five-match T20I series at home in August 2023.

West Indies captain Shai Hope has been the standout batter in the ongoing series, leading the run charts with 261 runs, including two centuries scored in victories. India, meanwhile, have depended on contributions from several batters, although their performances have fluctuated across the first four matches.

Given the high-scoring nature of the series, a run-filled contest could be possible if conditions allow play to begin. However, the weather remains the biggest obstacle to a decisive finish.

Ground staff remained on standby to remove the covers once conditions improved, while spectators hoped the rain would relent and allow the teams to complete the series.

For now, the outcome of the final T20I—and the destination of the series trophy—depends on whether Bengaluru's skies clear in time for cricket to resume.
