RBI Appoints Sudhakar Malli as Executive Director

New Delhi, October 2026: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday appointed Sudhakar Malli as Executive Director (ED), effective October 1, strengthening its senior leadership team with a career central banker who has nearly three decades of experience across banking supervision and other key areas.

Prior to his elevation as Executive Director, Malli was serving as Chief General Manager-in-Charge of the Department of Supervision at the central bank. In his new role, he will oversee the Department of Supervision (Supervisory Assessment), the RBI said.

According to the central bank, Malli has around 30 years of experience with the RBI, including more than 25 years in the supervision of banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and co-operative banks.

“Sudhakar is a career central banker with around three decades of experience,” the RBI said, highlighting his extensive supervisory experience across different categories of financial institutions.

Malli has also gained around five years of supervisory experience in overseas jurisdictions. In addition to his work in financial supervision, he has experience in the area of currency management.

The newly appointed Executive Director holds a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB), a professional qualification in the banking sector.

Malli’s appointment comes amid a series of senior-level appointments at the RBI in recent months, with the central bank assigning experienced officials to oversee important regulatory, financial and administrative departments.

Last month, the RBI appointed Suman Ray as Executive Director with immediate effect. Before his promotion, Ray was serving as Regional Director for Maharashtra.

As Executive Director, Ray is responsible for the Department of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation and the Premises Department.

Ray has more than three decades of experience at the RBI and has worked across several areas, including currency management, financial inclusion, payment and settlement systems, consumer education and protection, and human resources.

He also served as Secretary to the Western Area Local Board of the Reserve Bank.

In August, the RBI appointed Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director. She was assigned responsibility for the Foreign Exchange Department and the Financial Markets Regulation Department.

Chakraborty is also a career central banker with more than three decades of experience at the RBI. Her professional experience includes work in supervision, foreign exchange, and government and bank accounts.

She was associated with a technical committee constituted to review the format of the RBI’s Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Account. Chakraborty has also served as a Banking Ombudsman.

The appointments of Malli, Ray and Chakraborty underline the RBI’s practice of drawing on experienced career officials for senior leadership positions across key regulatory and operational functions.
