Vadodara, Oct 2026 : Left-arm spinner Shree Charani claimed an impressive four-wicket haul as world champions India bowled out Zimbabwe for 197 in 49.5 overs in the first match of the three-ODI women's series at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi near Vadodara on Friday.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Zimbabwe struggled to build sustained partnerships against India's disciplined bowling attack. Charani returned figures of 4 for 23, while Kranti Gaud took three wickets for 42 runs. Deepti Sharma claimed two wickets and Shafali Verma picked up one as India maintained pressure throughout the innings.
Zimbabwe suffered an early setback when opener Loryn Phiri was caught and bowled by Gaud in the third over. India had another opportunity to strike in the same over, but wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh dropped a catch to give Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano a reprieve.
Mugeri-Tiripano and fellow opener Modester Mupachikwa attempted to stabilise the innings, rotating the strike and capitalising on loose deliveries. However, India's fielders missed another opportunity when vice-captain Deepti dropped a catch in the slips during the eighth over. Zimbabwe reached 46 for one at the end of the powerplay.
Captain Smriti Mandhana introduced Charani after the fielding restrictions were lifted, and the spinner quickly made an impact. She trapped Mugeri-Tiripano leg before wicket for 21 off 27 balls, ending the second-wicket partnership.
Charani struck again in the 15th over when Mupachikwa mistimed an attempted lofted shot and was caught by Gaud. The opener departed for 25 off 44 deliveries, leaving Zimbabwe under pressure.
Deepti strengthened India's position by dismissing Sharne Mayers in the 18th over. Mayers attempted to attack a tossed-up delivery but failed to clear the infield, departing for eight off 12 balls.
With wickets falling regularly, Beloved Biza and Nyasha Gwanzura took responsibility for rebuilding the innings. The pair rotated the strike effectively and found occasional boundaries, helping Zimbabwe cross the 100-run mark in the 26th over.
Mandhana brought Charani back when the partnership began to develop, and the spinner responded by taking a return catch to dismiss Gwanzura for 13 off 28 balls.
Biza continued to hold the innings together and found support from Chiedza Dhururu. The former gradually increased her contribution, reaching her half-century in the 35th over with a boundary off her 64th delivery.
India struck again in the same over as Gaud bowled Dhururu for 10 off 23 balls. Her dismissal left Biza with the responsibility of guiding Zimbabwe towards a competitive total.
Michelle Mavunga provided some late momentum with an aggressive innings at No. 8. She struck boundaries to help Zimbabwe approach the 160-run mark in the 39th over. However, Charani ended her resistance in the 43rd over, dismissing Mavunga for 29 off just 23 balls and completing her four-wicket haul.
Zimbabwe's stand-in captain Nomvelo Sibanda fell to Shafali soon afterwards as India continued to dismantle the lower order. Biza remained the visitors' leading contributor but was eventually dismissed by Gaud, with Mandhana taking the catch.
Biza top-scored with a determined 62 off 92 balls, including four boundaries, providing the backbone of Zimbabwe's innings.
Deepti wrapped up the innings by bowling Tendai Makusha off the penultimate ball, leaving Zimbabwe all out for 197 in 49.5 overs.
Charani's outstanding spell and Gaud's three wickets ensured India restricted the visitors to a modest total despite missed catching opportunities early in the innings.
India will look to build on their bowling performance as the world champions pursue victory in the opening match of the three-game series.
