Sonia Gandhi Visits Lalu Prasad Yadav in Delhi, Tejashwi Calls for Opposition Unity

Patna, Nov 2026 : Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday visited Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav at the residence of his daughter Misa Bharti in New Delhi and enquired about his health. Lalu Prasad is currently receiving treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

According to family members, the former Bihar chief minister, who has been facing health issues for several years, was recently shifted to Delhi for specialised medical consultation after treatment and observation at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna. His condition is stated to be stable.

Sharing photographs of the meeting on X, Lalu Prasad said Sonia Gandhi’s visit brought back memories of their political association during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

He recalled welfare initiatives undertaken during the UPA regime for youth, farmers, soldiers and the common people. He also highlighted landmark legislations, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the Right to Education (RTE) Act and the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

Lalu Prasad further recalled that the government led by then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had allocated more than Rs 1.45 lakh crore for Bihar’s development.

Bihar Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav said Sonia Gandhi’s visit was primarily intended to enquire about his father’s health. He said Lalu Prasad had travelled to Delhi for a routine medical check-up and that Sonia Gandhi had expressed a desire to meet him.

“Lalu Prasad and Sonia Gandhi have shared a good relationship from the very beginning. They have stood by and supported each other during difficult circumstances. Our family and the Gandhi family have also shared a longstanding relationship,” Tejashwi said.

He added that the two leaders had not met for a long time and that the purpose of Monday’s meeting was to enquire about Lalu Prasad’s health.

Meanwhile, Tejashwi reiterated the need for unity among Opposition parties following the INDIA bloc’s rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. He said parties across the country would have to stand together to address the challenges facing the nation.

“We will not win this battle unless we stand united. We did gather yesterday, but that was not the final event. We are not the kind of people who will sit quietly until action is taken against Gyanesh Kumar,” he said.

Responding to the BJP’s description of the rally as a failure, Tejashwi questioned why the ruling party was reacting strongly.

“If the rally had been a flop, why would there be any need to prove it was a flop?” he said, alleging that the BJP was troubled because its “theft” had been exposed.
