Washington, September 2026 : US President Donald Trump has announced what he described as a permanent security arrangement with Denmark and Greenland that would give Washington expanded control over security matters on the strategically important Arctic island, while restricting military and sensitive investment activities by US adversaries.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the arrangement would have no expiry and would address longstanding US security concerns surrounding Greenland. A US State Department official said the provisions would remain in force even if Greenland were to become fully independent.
“There will be NO COST to the United States!” Trump wrote, adding that American representatives had worked with Denmark and Greenland at his direction to reach the arrangement.
However, the announcements did not include the full text of the agreement or statements from the Danish and Greenlandic authorities. They also provided no details on how a proposed expansion of the US military presence would be financed, despite Trump’s assertion that the arrangement would involve no cost to American taxpayers.
Trump said the agreement would also give Washington authority over potential military activity and sensitive investments by countries viewed as US adversaries.
“Additionally, from now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval,” he said.
The US President also announced plans to begin expanding the American military presence on the island. He did not specify the locations being considered, the number of additional troops that could be deployed or the timeline for construction.
“We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many,” Trump said. “We will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the arrangement as providing a permanent guarantee of American security interests in the Arctic.
“Greenland will forever be part of the strategic defense area of North America and exclude any adversary from it and the surrounding area,” Rubio said, adding that the deal “permanently and completely addresses our national security concerns in Greenland.”
A State Department official, speaking on background, said the arrangement would provide the United States with permanent access, basing and overflight rights. The official said Washington would be able to increase the number of military bases in Greenland when required.
According to the official, the agreement would explicitly prohibit countries outside NATO from establishing military bases or deploying troops on Greenland. China and Russia would therefore be barred from establishing bases or sending military personnel on the island, the official said.
The arrangement would also cover investment in strategically sensitive sectors. The State Department official said it would prevent adversaries from making investments that could pose risks to US national security. Under the official’s description, only the United States and its allies would be permitted to undertake sensitive investments.
The official said the agreement had been reached during the week and would continue to apply even if Greenland eventually became independent. Trump described the arrangement as indefinite and said it would benefit Denmark, Greenland and US allies.
The announcement builds on a US military relationship with Greenland that dates back decades. Washington and Copenhagen signed a defence agreement in 1951, while a subsequent agreement signed at Igaliku in 2004 amended and supplemented that framework.
Greenland already hosts the US military’s Pituffik Space Base, which has an important role in American defence and space operations. Its radar systems support missile warning, missile defence and space surveillance, making the Arctic island a significant location for monitoring potential threats to North America.
The latest announcement places Greenland once again at the centre of US Arctic security policy, with Washington seeking to strengthen its military access while limiting the strategic activities of rival powers in the region.
