This visit will help Japanese tourists develop a better understanding of Uttar Pradesh: Tourism Minister

Agra, August 2026: The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh is continuously working to establish the state as a global tourism and investment hub. In this direction, Agra witnessed a significant moment on Thursday when a high-level delegation from Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture began its much-anticipated tourism visit to Uttar Pradesh.

Led by Yamanashi Governor Kotaro Nagasaki and Deputy Governor Junichi Ishidera, the Japanese delegation visited the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, while also experiencing Indian culture, the traditions of the Braj region and the warm hospitality extended by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Journey Begins with Braj Culture and Traditional Welcome

The Japanese guests were given a vibrant glimpse of Uttar Pradesh’s rich heritage and living cultural traditions. After participating in a programme at Galgotias University, the delegation arrived in Agra, where it was welcomed with the colourful traditions of Braj.

Special performances of the traditional Mayur dance and Braj Rasiyas were organised in honour of the Japanese guests. The cultural presentations deeply impressed the delegation.

Tourism Department Director General Dr Vedapati Mishra and Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh met the guests at the JP Palace and hosted them for lunch. From the very beginning of the visit, the Japanese delegation experienced the depth of the traditional Indian ethos of “Atithi Devo Bhava”, or treating guests as divine.

Kotaro Nagasaki Impressed by Taj Mahal’s Beauty and Craftsmanship

Following the lunch and formal interactions, the Japanese delegation visited the world-famous Taj Mahal. The grandeur of the magnificent white-marble monument and its intricate craftsmanship made a strong impression on the visitors.

Yamanashi Governor Kotaro Nagasaki appeared deeply impressed after seeing the monument in person.

Sharing his experience, Nagasaki said that although he had seen the Taj Mahal many times in photographs, experiencing it from close quarters was completely different.

“I had seen the Taj Mahal many times in photographs, but coming here allowed me to experience its craftsmanship in a completely different way. It looks magnificent from a distance, but its intricate details are even more impressive when viewed closely,” he said.

Smooth Arrangements Win Praise from Japanese Delegation

The arrangements made for the foreign guests were designed to ensure a smooth and hassle-free visit. Following the directions of the Yogi government, the administration made extensive arrangements for security, traffic management and hospitality.

Kazuhiko Nakamura, President of Yamanashi University, openly praised the arrangements.

He said that despite the delegation’s busy schedule, members were able to travel from one programme to another comfortably and on time. He noted that the best arrangements are often those that travellers do not have to think about separately.

The smooth arrangements allowed the delegation to focus on understanding the people, culture and places of Uttar Pradesh rather than worrying about logistics.

Braj Cultural Experience Sparks Curiosity About India

The Agra visit was designed to give the Japanese delegation more than just an experience of an iconic monument like the Taj Mahal. It also introduced them to the cultural identity of the Braj region.

Yamanashi Deputy Governor Junichi Ishidera praised the Braj cultural experience, describing it as special. He said beginning the visit with a living cultural experience rather than immediately visiting a monument or tourist attraction made the journey particularly meaningful.

The traditional welcome introduced the delegation to the region’s rich cultural heritage and created a natural curiosity to learn more about the destination before exploring its landmarks.

Journey to Continue to Lucknow and Eastern Uttar Pradesh

After experiencing Agra’s tourism and culture, the Japanese delegation departed for Lucknow on Thursday evening.

The Yogi government has proposed a major tourism programme at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow on August 21. A key feature will be a roundtable meeting with more than 50 tour operators, hospitality-sector representatives and entrepreneurs.

A tourism exhibition and interactive sessions on opportunities for mutual cooperation will also be organised. The Lucknow programme will seek to take the delegation’s visit beyond tourism and explore institutional cooperation in the hospitality sector.

Discussions are expected to cover Buddhist tourism, wellness tourism, cultural exchanges and the development of new experiences for tourists.

The delegation will subsequently travel to eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Varanasi and important sites associated with the centuries-old Buddhist links between India and Japan.

Tourism to Gain a New Dimension in Uttar Pradesh

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said Agra was the first destination of the Japanese delegation’s Uttar Pradesh visit. After experiencing the grandeur of the Taj Mahal, the delegation would now be introduced to other dimensions of the state’s diverse tourism landscape.

He said the Taj Mahal may be the most familiar gateway to Uttar Pradesh for international visitors, but the journey ahead would showcase the state’s wider cultural and tourism diversity.

In Lucknow, the Japanese delegation will experience Awadhi hospitality and cuisine, while the eastern Uttar Pradesh tour will introduce them to India and Japan’s centuries-old Buddhist and spiritual connections.

Jaiveer Singh said the government’s objective was to ensure that the delegation viewed Agra, Lucknow and eastern Uttar Pradesh not as isolated tourist destinations but as interconnected components of a comprehensive Uttar Pradesh tourism experience.

He said the visit would help Japanese tourists and institutions develop a first-hand understanding of Uttar Pradesh. India and Japan already share strong bilateral relations, and tourism can add an important human dimension to those ties.

If the visit inspires more Japanese tourists to explore Uttar Pradesh, he said, it would make the initiative even more meaningful.

The state government believes the initiative will strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s position on the global tourism map while also creating new opportunities for foreign investment, employment and economic growth.
