The acclaimed Hindi and Marathi actor was found unconscious at his Dona Paula residence and could not be revived despite efforts at a Goa hospital

Mumbai, October 2026: Veteran actor Nana Patekar, one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated performers, died at the age of 75 on Thursday after suffering a severe cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa. He was found unconscious at his home in the early hours and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him.

According to reports, Patekar was taken to Manipal Hospital in Dona Paula after his condition suddenly deteriorated. Doctors reportedly performed CPR for around 45 minutes, but he could not be revived. He was declared dead at around 5.20 a.m.

A medico-legal case has been registered, and a post-mortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death. While the initial medical information points to cardiac arrest, the detailed official findings are awaited.

Four Decades of Memorable Performances

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Murud-Janjira, Maharashtra, Nana Patekar began his film career with the 1978 movie Gaman. Over the following four decades, he established himself as a powerful performer in both Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Known for his intense screen presence, distinctive dialogue delivery and ability to bring realism to complex characters, Patekar became one of the most recognisable actors of his generation.

His notable films include Parinda, Prahaar, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan, Welcome and the Marathi classic Natsamrat. His performances earned him three National Film Awards, while the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2013.

Patekar was equally respected for his work beyond mainstream cinema. His career included acting, directing and writing, allowing him to contribute to Indian cinema in multiple capacities.

Commitment to Social Causes

Away from films, Patekar was also associated with social initiatives, particularly those involving farmers and families affected by agrarian distress.

Along with actor Makarand Anaspure, he co-founded the Naam Foundation, an organisation that works to support farmers and families in Maharashtra facing difficult circumstances.

His engagement with social issues and his willingness to speak openly on matters affecting ordinary people also remained an important part of his public identity.

Patekar’s death brings to an end a remarkable career that spanned more than 40 years and left a lasting imprint on both Hindi and Marathi cinema. His performances, distinctive screen presence and contribution to social causes earned him a wide following across generations.

Details regarding his last rites and funeral arrangements are awaited, while tributes are expected from colleagues, political leaders and admirers across the country.
