Serchhip, August 2026: In accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court, the new waste management system under the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 is being implemented vigorously in Serchhip district.
Efforts to ensure segregation of waste into four categories are also progressing. On August 27, 2026, Isaac Lalchhuanmawia, Senior Executive Engineer of the PHE Serchhip WATSAN Division, distributed four-category waste segregation bins in four villages selected as pilot villages in rural areas — Leng, Sailulak, Sialsir and Baktawng Tlangnuam.
As reported earlier, four-way waste segregation has also been initiated in the urban areas of Serchhip district, particularly in the New Serchhip North and South VC areas, from August 2026.
A Special Cell has been constituted under the leadership of Serchhip Deputy Commissioner Paul L. Khuma, and a comprehensive Action Plan has been prepared. Major waste management facilities are being established at Serchhip, Thenzawl and N. Vanlaiphai, with work being carried out on a fast-track basis.
The responsibility for monitoring waste segregation and management in rural areas rests with the PHE Department, while waste management in urban areas is handled by the District Urban Development Office (DUDO).
The authorities have clarified that these initiatives are not intended to create inconvenience for the public. E-waste and sanitary waste, including diapers and sanitary pads, are expected to be generated in relatively small quantities. People are therefore urged not to be alarmed or create unnecessary concerns regarding the new system.
The initiative is aimed at creating cleaner, healthier and more pleasant surroundings, enabling people to enjoy better physical and mental well-being and helping create a clean and healthy environment for future generations.
All citizens are urged to understand the purpose of the initiative, extend their full cooperation and actively participate in proper waste segregation and management.
