US: Former President Jimmy Carter Passes Away at 100

Former US President Jimmy Carter passed away on Sunday at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, according to a report by The Washington Post citing his son, James E. Carter III. While his death was confirmed by Carter’s family, the exact cause has not yet been disclosed. In February 2023, the Carter Center announced that, following multiple hospital stays, the former president had opted for hospice care at home, forgoing further medical treatments. In recent years, Carter had battled an aggressive form of melanoma that had metastasized to his liver and brain.

Carter was last seen publicly on October 1, 2023, during a flyover celebrating his 100th birthday at his Plains residence, surrounded by family and friends.

Jimmy Carter’s life was marked by a diverse array of roles. A humble peanut farmer and a US Navy veteran, he served as Georgia’s governor from 1971 to 1975 before becoming the 39th President of the United States. He made history as the first president from the Deep South since 1837 and the only Democrat to hold the office between Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton.

Carter’s presidency is perhaps best remembered for his role in brokering the Camp David Accords, a groundbreaking peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. This achievement earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his “decades of tireless efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advance democracy, and promote economic and social development.”

His presidency also saw the negotiation of the Panama Canal Treaty, which transferred control of the canal to Panama, fostering stronger relations with Latin American nations. Additionally, Carter extended full diplomatic recognition to China and prioritized human rights as a cornerstone of US foreign policy.

Post-presidency, Carter’s legacy extended far beyond the White House. He devoted himself to humanitarian efforts, founding the Carter Center in 1982, which focused on advancing global health, democracy, and conflict resolution. His work in eradicating diseases like Guinea worm and promoting fair elections worldwide solidified his reputation as a global statesman.

Jimmy Carter’s century-long life exemplified dedication to public service and the pursuit of peace. His legacy will endure as a symbol of humility, perseverance, and the unwavering pursuit of justice and equality.
